A visitor in the banana trees for #FolkloreThursday! Southern folk belief considers green tree frogs sacred garden guardians. Finding one tucked in your leaves promises thriving soil, and old mountain lore warns that harming a tree frog will cause your spring or well to run dry. #FolkWitch #WitchSky

We talk readily about the collective folklore we still half-believe from days of parental scarelore – Stay Belows, Harrowhounds, Blackwater John – yet remain tight-lipped about our intimate encounters with it. As if to speak would break some cherished spell. – Dr. M. Benn #FolkloreThursday

Autumn-flowering Cyclamen hederifolium has the curious old name ‘sowbread’, recalling the wild pigs said to root up its tubers to eat. Vita Sackville-West saw something altogether more delicate in its swept-back petals, likening them to ‘leveret ears laid back’. #FolkloreThursday

A collage of four photographs of autumn-flowering Cyclamen hederifolium. Delicate flowers in shades of pale lilac, pink and magenta rise on slender stems above heart-shaped, ivy-like leaves, beautifully marbled with silver and green. A close-up reveals the swept-back petals, resembling the ears of a young hare, with deeper magenta colouring at their base. The flowers grow in clusters among moss and fallen autumn leaves.

The Magic of the Mystical Rowan Tree

The rowan tree, also known as Mountain Ash, is not well known for its medicinal benefits but has a long tradition as a ward against evil and the supernatural. Traditionally known as ‘care’ or ‘care-tree’

A #Selkie is a merseal from Celtic #folklore. They transform into humans by removing their pelt. Losing their coat means they cannot return to the sea. A snippet of a #poem I wrote:

Title: skin-bare selkie by @k13uanh

Poem: submerging in suspended silt she sifts through sunken memory languishing breaths bathed in fleeting comfort the pool swallows her calcified carcass her skin dissipates

Graphic: shows grey doily and wax golden seal on the top left, skeletal remains of a seal on the bottom left and a ripped page of the poem verse on the right on a sage-grey background

At St Keyne’s Well in Cornwall, legend says whichever newlywed drinks first will rule the home. 💍
In Southey’s ballad, the groom rushes to the well—but his bride brought a bottle to church.
Four trees. One sip. The quieter magic wins. ✨

Three hearts. Blue blood. Eight arms that taste.

Ainu lore tells of red giant Akkorokamui; in Hawaiʻi, the octopus is a form of Kanaloa. 🌊

A 2018 paper proposed frozen eggs arriving on comets—an unproven idea. ☄️
