Leviticus 20:26 (NKJV): And you shall be holy to Me, for I the LORD am holy, and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be Mine.

The Hebrew word translated “holy” means “sacred”. It comes from the word that means “to be clean”. The word that is translated “peoples” comes from a word that is translated as “hide”. Today’s verse for me is a reminder that there was a time in my life that I denied any faith in God. I lived a life that was solely focused on myself. I did not take other people’s ideas and opinions into account. They were immaterial to me. I was fully convinced that I knew what was best and was going to follow my own lead. I can fully confess that a life lived like that is lonely. At first, it seems empowering, then you slowly learn over time that there is no one around you anymore. That loneliness includes a lack of the presence of God. This is not what the LORD our God wants for us. The LORD our God does not want us alone. The LORD our God pursues us each day to be with us. The LORD wants to walk with us, talk with us, and live down here in the dirt with us. To do that, the LORD makes us clean like God. The LORD takes us out of hiding and presents us to God as one who is worthy of the love and mercy freely given to us. The LORD our God wants us to be found. The LORD our God wants us to be included in the life of faith. The LORD our God wants us to receive the love and wholeness that is freely offered us. Today, may we turn and let ourselves be caught by the LORD our God, so that we can be set apart for the work of love and peace.

John 4:14 (NKJV): but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.

Jesus has been asked if He is greater than Jacob. Jacob who dug the well that He was sitting at. Jacob who had tended the land that Jesus was walking. Jacob who was the main patriarch to the people of that area. Jesus is asked if He is greater than that. Jesus being Jesus does not give a direct answer. Jesus is not there to say things that would disparage Jacob. Instead, Jesus tells the woman at the well who He is. But Jesus tells her in a way that invites her to believe more fully in God. Jesus tells her in a way that starts a conversation. Jesus could have just answered her directly and firmly and walked away. But that is not who Jesus is. Instead, Jesus invites the woman at the well into a relationship that will change who she is. Jesus invites her into a relationship that turns her into the first evangelist. Jesus invites her into a relationship that in societal terms was forbidden. But Jesus does not come into our lives to conform us to the world. Jesus comes into our lives to set us free from the burdens placed on us by the world. Jesus sets the woman at the well free from her past and gives her hope for the futures. Jesus brings forgiveness and agape love into her life instead of condemnation. Today’s verse is a reminder that Jesus does the same for us. When we are tired and at the end of our rope, Jesus gives us forgiveness and healing. When we are afraid of circumstances, Jesus brings us joy and peace. Today, may we allow the living water that is Christ Jesus flow in and out of us to show the love and wholeness that is offered to all of us.
