Another Furrow Orbweaver (Larinioides cornutus) for #Arachtober. I like how the web shows up in this one.

#Arachtober 16: oy gevalt, almost forgot…anyway here's a zebra jumping spider (_Salticus scenicus_). °OO°

#DailySpiderPic #spiders #JumpingSpiders #Araneae #Salticidae

Three-quarters view of a small jumping spider on limestone. It has a pair of large forward-facing eyes and its abdomen is striped white and brown. (The colour of the zebra stripes can range from the palest grey to brown to jet black.)The spider looking straight up at the camera. It has a smaller pair of eyes flanking its main pair. Fangs can be seen at the ends of its shiny black chelicerae, partly hidden by fluffy white pedipalps.A view of the spider's abdomen, showing the diagonal stripes of white and rusty brown, formed out of lots of little hairs.

By far, this young Cornfield Bolas Spider, Mastophora hutchinsoni, was our best yard find this year, discovered by my partner, Heidi, in late August. Leavenworth, Kansas, USA. This photo from August 29, but seen on the 25th first. #Arachtober #bugsky #bugwatching #spiders

Round, compact spider, mottled white and gray with a pair of brown humps on the top front of the abdomen. Cephalothorax dark brown. Vaguely banded legs wrapped tightly around the body. Sitting on a thin silk pad on the surface of a leaf. Spider looks like a pile of bird poop.

Ok finished birds & rabbit, let wildflowers grow, then thought: "corner's empty". So in lieu of birds, added a spider who's just finished eating and going to rest. Not sure if I over did it 🤷🏻‍♂️ oh well! I think I'll call this series *Urbs Circumdata In Horto* ⤵️

An acrylic painting, 20"x16" (51cmx41cm): there'sa compass plant taking up most of the left half of the canvas, in the center and in the distance is the city of Chicago with colorful buildings, green trees at their foot. Lake Michigan divided the painting and the bottom halsifo wildflower prairie. There are 3 Barn Swallows flying through the summer scene. One is hunting a bee. There's a rabbit munching on some leaves at the walking path. A third bee is having a meal on a purple flower. In the upper right corner, an Orb Weaver spider has just finished a meal from one of the 2 insects wrapped in white web. It's now walking back to the flowers for a little nap. A close up of the corner of the painting, showing the spider and its little markings and colors.

I brought the painting back out to work on it and finish it. I decided to include a couple little barn swallows flying through the prairie above the wildflowers. 🪶 #SciArt #BirdArt #Animalllustration #WildlifeIllustration

The full acrylic painting with the new addition of two barn swallows in the lower right corner. There are
some silhouettes of future flowers showing up here and there. The city of Chicago is in the distance , past the lake. A large closin blooming compass flower takes up most of the left half of the canvas, and a bee is havinga meal in one of the flowers. A close of the first stages of the pair of swallows being paintedThe birds are mostly finished. Now on to the flyers and Bunny and more!

West coast Neoscona orbweaver for #arachtober 16. I was proud of this shot since it was through a window at twilight, no flash, and still managed to get some detail.(Altadena, CA this July)

i love it when the ambush hunter children get along. here's an antlion pit and a juvenile purseweb, in harmony
#arachtober #myrmeleoctober

the base of a tree with some of the driest dirt in virginia, the traps of an antlion larva and a juvenile purseweb spider wait to catch some food
the antlion digs a conical pit in sandy soil, when an insect walks too close it falls towards the bottom where the larva is buried. the larva's large mouthparts wait for something to hit the bottom so they can dig in
the spider lives in a silk-lined burrow in the dirt, but the silk lining extends upward (usually along the base of a tree, but this one's not flush against the trunk). coated in dirt, the tube is not obviously a spider's web... but when an insect walks across it, the spider runs up and attacks from inside the tube.

Here's an actual camera photo I took of a labyrinth orbweaver, genus Metepeira, at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum west of Tucson, on October 4. These spiders pair a tangled web, and conical retreat, with the "standard" circular one. #Arachtober #bugsky #bugwatching #spiders #arachnids

Small spider, facing head down, with silken retreat or egg sac behind it, with silken strands radiating from it. Spider is mottled brown and gray, with a white double cross or "cardiac" mark on the abdomen. Background is blurred vegetation and building wall.

For the ides of #arachtober a Napoleon spider (Synema globosum) from Siena, IT, 5/2023.

#bugsky

Spider with bulbous body, front pairs of legs black and open wide, back pairs of legs white with dark bands. Body is red with a black shape that looks a bit lie a Napoleon-style hat, a thin neck and a torso with wide epaulettes.

Spider too small to see, hiding in a crack with her cast-off legs. New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/2026/10/thir... #VancouverIsland #Spiders #Arachnids #Invertebrates #Arachtober #NaturePhotography

Photo taken by mistake. A crack in the paint, with an invisible spider (to the naked eye). In the centre, a dark spider; just a blob with legs. The legs are pale greyish brown, with black knees. And hairy. She has just molted; on the right are her empty legs. And a little grey "football"; I have no idea what that is. Background; greyish white, gloss paint.
