The photo is looking towards the afternoon sun over the Sierra Nevada mountains in Genoa, Nevada, one of Nevada's oldest towns. The sunlight is backlighting all the beautiful autumn leaves...yellow, red, orange and green. There is a sign designating your arrival to Genoa. It has the city's name curved to fit the white arch background on a maroon rectangular column. Underneath is a blackboard to write any announcements to the public. The entire sign sits on top of a rock pedestal. Behind the sign is an old courthouse in colonial style, also maroon and white like the sign. An old, 2-story clapboard building that has dark peeling paint on one side, old and worn awnings on the front side. There are windows on the bottom floor on the side, but there are windows on both levels from the front of the building. Bare trees cast spooky shadows onto the building. One of the oldest standing structures (built 1887) in South Pasadena, this building has served many purposes (a hotel, general store, and school – just to name a few). Many have felt strange presences throughout the building, particularly on the second floor. Considering it’s storied past, it might just be brimming with spirits. Update: Since I took this photo in 2015 when it was known as the Meridian Iron Works, it has been restored and painted white. It now houses the South Pasadena Historical Society. Stories of being haunted still persist.
