One thing I'm prone to doing is to have the narration point out what the character expects to happen if they assumed their life was a story being written by a bad author.

Sometimes it happens as expected, sometimes not, sometimes it doesn't happen at all.

Does that count?

Whimsical Writers (Sept. 5th)!

Let's talk about a silly aspect of writing today. It doesn't have to be from your own work, it could be a Lemony Snicket style interjection or a Gravity Falls coded message. Be sure to use examples of them!

A lot of writers play little "games" with their readers by slipping in silly bits of foreshadowing or by naming their characters with puns. What's your favourite of these and why?

I got a significant tree for today's #WhimsicalWriters!! Though I describe the wood more than the tree.

One of the recurring motifs of 1661 is the meeting of old and new, the death of the ancient and its reincarnation in the young, and the layering of many timescales, as in this ch2 moment.

The path that took them from the close-mown great lawn to where the chalk-hill beech-wood still stood, shaped only gently from the ancient times, was marked only by crushed stalks of winter-yellow grass, yet the young man walked as though he knew it. He certainly knew the shape of the naked branches that arched overhead, the stripes of light they cast across his face, the colour and crunch of their brittle and faded leaves underfoot. The warm weather had coaxed the snowdrops to bloom early, and now they were almost blown, just here and there tufts of white midst the roots. But he could remember, very dimly, that once they formed a carpet, sparkling and magical, on the left and on the right—and though they’d crept out of their bounds in the Aldridges’ absence, the way could still be found by walking between them.
If the occupiers had ever done so, they would have eventually found, ‘round the bulk of an ancient oak that predated Parliament-men, the Aldridges, and perhaps the beeches themselves, a wall of sunset-coloured bricks webbed over with moss. The gate was open, as Alexander expected, and as he passed it, the man who was hunched over the weeds in the corner rose and took off his hat.

Well, I have one. It does stuff.

Taking the lead Rollan quickened their pace. As they turned the final bend, he slowed. In the distance, the NeoYew. Its branches stretched wide over the clearing. Even in the dead of winter, the rich dark needles on each branch were surrounded by tiny flower buds. The surrounding foliage were lifeless husks. The ground beneath it exuded a disturbing stillness. Bodies of creatures great and small piled, lifeless, at the base. His eyes fell to the single entity from the video. His hand frozen with the fingers curled to the sky.

I'm Kori (she/they/fae) and yesterday was the weirdest. I was brain fogged for most of the morning and was struggling to get up and going. Finally left during a very sunny break in the all day storm we were having...

Hello my #WhimsicalWriters!

I'm going to share an excerpt from Deilenddu Forest, my ninth Raven & Bear story. I wanted to include a bit of Solar Punk in this story, so now we have a forest which generates electricity. I hope you like it!
#Raven+Bear #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompt #Cymru

An excerpt from Deilenddu Forest (Raven & Bear: 9) by Bramble, in black text on a white background. Below the title is a description of an artificial forest with black leaves and metal branches, which remind Sir Corbyn of his past.

Transcript:
Deilenddu Forest

A forest of black leaves stretched across the eastern border of Gwent, a barricade against that baleful wood monsters called home. Beneath this faux foliage, steel branches swayed in a stern breeze. Their eerie melody reminded Sir Corbyn of his father’s trawler, for its hull had groaned horribly when they crested a wave. He turned from the memory to watch Ata, she was already thirteen and in her third year as a page.

Unfortunately TY4LM only has two very underwhelming mentions of trees, so I'll be borrowing from my Lineage of Zeal series Book 1, Rosemary.

Here our heroine enters the Wild Wood for the first time in a flashback to her youth~

Rosemary could see how the wood had gained such an ill reputation. The gnarled black trees that made up the forest were sinister and foreboding in stature, and the thick brush crowding the twisted trunks served to exacerbate the image. When Demitri entered the wood, Rosemary stopped short and let her hand slip out of his. She was not scared, but neither was she comfortable walking amongst trees whose knotted, finger-like branches seemed to claw at her when the wind rustled them, and continued to do so long after the wind had died.

I have to go with one of the special upir trees for this~

I’ll take this chance to describe a tree I’m tentatively calling a heartblade:

The tree stretched, silver and shining with spindled leaves. Thorned boughs carried blooms of snow and scarlet. The wind ripped petals loose, but the wood never yielded.

I don't have super descriptive mentions of trees by themselves in my work, #WhimsicalWriters.

But, I have two WIPs, and here's trees in them.

A snippet from Such Sweet Sorrow by Artemis Quinn. It says:

I was surrounded in the beautiful golds and oranges as the dying trees blazed in their final colors of the year.A snippet from Aloe by Artemis Quinn in Acanthus' POV. It says:

I glanced up to the sky. The dulled gray was fractured by the spidery brown boughs of the trees, their leaves sagging and darkened with the downpour.

Whilst I mention trees a bunch in my current WIP, I haven't yet taken the opportunity to describe one to much extent. So, I took this as an opportunity to go back and add a little colour into one of my already written chapters. #WhimsicalWriters #Arthuriana #WriteSky

Whimsical Writers (Sept. 3rd)!

Let's dive into a descriptive exercise. As writers, we need to pay close attention to our world. So, if you don't have a description of a tree go for a walk and find one to write about. Connect to the world.

Apparently, Tolkein was a nightmare to walk anywhere with because he'd stop and stare at every tree on the way there. So give us the best description of a tree from your WIP.
