Vincent painted two versions of this portrait; the second painting is now in the collection of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. This version, his first version, was sold in 1990 to a private Japanese collector for $82.5 Million. Dr. Paul-Ferdinand Gachet was a homeopathic physician living in Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris. Vincent was under Dr. Gachet’s supervision for the final few months of his life, following his time at the Saint-Rémy-de-Provence asylum. Theo van Gogh, Vincent’s brother and art dealer, sought out Dr. Gachet for Vincent’s care on a recommendation from Camille Pissarro. Gachet was an art lover (and amateur painter) who had treated and advised several of the Impressionist artists. Vincent gave his portrait of Dr. Gachet a melancholy expression, with the doctor seated at a red table on which sit two yellow books and a glass containing the medicinal plant digitalis. Vincent was a difficult patient but he soon considered Gachet to be a friend; Gachet certainly cared for his patient but was hampered in his treatment due to the poorly understood conditions of mental health disorders at the time.
