Can't she live? Why Sanne Cant's bitchface helps women's cycling

Elite Women’s CX World Championship race itself was unpredictable and exciting, but on a symbolic level, it ended up as a predictable female rivalry narrative: a bubbly blonde versus a brooding brunette. As Sanne Cant sulked her way through the podium ceremony and post-race interviews, her expression was a bitchface that launched a hundred tweets. Many called her “emo,” referring to her blunt, asymmetrical haircut. One compared her to Adam Sandler in Little Nicky. Cycling insiders publicly called out Cant for her attitude as well as her comments. But is public sulking and hot-off-the-course critical comments to the press really that bad? Under the veneer of professionalism, we’re all human beings, soft and vulnerable after a crushing defeat. All the social media tut-tutting crowned Sanne Cant the sore loser of CX Worlds, but the contrarian in me says moping and complaining, however negative, are ingredients women’s pro cycling needs desperately to keep its story interesting.
To demonstrate how Sanne Cant’s bitchface helps women’s cycling, allow me to pull waaay back to a macro view of a woman’s life. One of the impossible, contrary demands placed on the modern woman is to be nice, sensitive, and congenial while chopping a clear path out the jungle of institutional patriarchy. In dating, we’re supposed to let a guy down easy or we get called uppity, high-maintenance, etc. In our careers, assertive attitudes are put down as bossy and bitchy. Women are expected to be independent, strong, successful—like Beyonce standing proud in front of a giant FEMINIST sign—but not too independent, strong, nor successful to be threatening. (Not even Beyonce can stop you from switching channels away from her!)californiastreaming - Feb 3, 2015 (2/3)

Women’s pro cycling is driven by a lot of optimistic empowerment feminism, with fans rallying around teams and riders trying to buoy the sport by a lot of good feelings, like how Zooey Deschanel got surly New Yorkers to power Santa’s sleigh with Christmas Spirit. Some of this can-do empowerment gets woven into the inspirational mythology of high-profile riders. Evie Stevens made her way through Wall Street, a man’s world. Carmen Small is raising her teen nieces. Emma Pooley and countless other female pros have advanced degrees. It’s rare for a top tier male pro cyclist to have a second career or doctorate degrees attached to their palmares, mostly because male pros get paid plenty, but also, it’s enough for a man to do what they do whereas women are expected to balance a career, a family, and self-fulfillment. These pro cyclist women, tho. They seem to have it all!
But isn’t all this affirmation of greatness a bit suffocating? I certainly find it so. All this build-up of approval and construction of The Well-rounded Pro Myth™ is flattening the narrative of women’s cycling, a story that is lousy with protagonists and short on antagonists. It was downright refreshing when, during Giro Rosa, Rabo-Liv made a concerted effort to cockblock Mara Abbott on a mountain stage—a move that drew plenty of criticism, which is rare in women’s pro cycling. Consider men’s cycling and its cast of characters: there’s an entire range from the infallibly likable Rigoberto Uran to shady as fuck villain Alexandre Vinokourov; or the riders who can be heroes one moment, divas the next like Mark Cavendish and Fabian Cancellara. It’s the riders’ personalities and antics that fuel the discussion in the long, fallow periods of meh racing or no racing at all. Likability isn’t the only currency in men’s cycling so why should it be on the women’s side of the sport? Sanne Cant’s sour grapes surely turned to wine people were still drunk on, right up to the […]californiastreaming - Feb 3, 2015 (3/3)

Another reason Sanne Cant’s bitchface helped women’s cycling: outing misogynist attitudes in some social media armchair critics. One of the most insufferable, gross aspects of women’s cycling fandom is that it’s too fucking easy for people to pat themselves on the back for supporting women while their attitude outside of fanboying is steeped in casual misogyny. I peeped Sanne Cant’s twitter mentions and few were from men taking glee by negging her short-hair “emo” appearance or a variation of "smile, girl!" that women typically get—all of which feels ad hominem to me especially considering how Cant rode her heart out to the very end. (To emphasize, some of these are comments tagging her that she will see in her mentions column. Rude!) If Cant and Pauline Ferrand-Prevot’s positions were reversed, I’m sure that instead of mocking Ferrand-Prevot, there would be a lot of “Aww, PFP looks super sad. :(“ comments from the stans who get their cues from outward appearance of femininity. Women’s cycling—and women in general—don’t need that kind of double standard. If you can’t handle a female pro at her devastated worst, you sure don’t deserve to call yourself a feminist for paying attention to women’s cycling.
We can call out Sanne Cant’s public display of disappointment and frustration as being unprofessional and unsportsmanlike, but if we do, we need to ask ourselves what we demand from professional sports. Do we want a glimpse of nobility and grace when shit gets rough? Do we want dramz and entertainment? Do we want the self-satisfaction of shaming a professional athlete via social media? Too often, sports fandom is concerned with policing and demanding infallibility from its athletes, but being a professional athlete never required an oath to always be perfect. Sanne Cant’s bitchface feels like a gift that added the depth of shortcoming to the narrative of women’s cycling that strives to maintain the facade, the myth of women […]
