Before the New York Marathon made her famous, Grete Waitz set a 3,000m world record in 1975 — on a new energy-returning track. The catch: the distance she was built for was still treated as medically suspect for women to run. #RunningHistory #Marathon #WomensRunning #Running #TheLongRun

#Marathon somehow Wallah didn't get hit by this overheat? just perfectly timed a punch i guess???

Grete Waitz had never run a marathon when she lined up in New York in 1978 — her husband reportedly suggested it as a weekend trip. She ran 2:32:30, two minutes under the world best, in her first attempt at the distance.

#hardlopen #marathon #kustmarathon @hardlopers.bsky.social

Grete Waitz spent her career on the track thinking the marathon was absurdly long. She ran New York in 1978 almost as a lark — and set a world best in her first attempt at the distance. The event she dismissed turned out to be the one she was built for.
