In which the Orient beat Stanley in a match that is less one-sided than it sounds, reported in Sporting Life on 3 October 1898. "In view of witnessing an interesting game nearly 1,200 spectators lined the ropes at the New Athletic Ground, Clapton, on Saturday. The visitors..." #lofc #lofcpress

A clipping from Sporting Life, 3 October 1898, reading:

CLAPTON ORIENT V. STANLEY.

In view of witnessing an interesting game nearly 1,200 spectators lined the ropes at the New Athletic Ground, Clapton, on Saturday. The visitors, whom it will be remembered, showed such excellent form in the London League last season, were late in arriving, consequently it was half an hour after the advertised time before the ball was set rolling. Stanley were well represented, while the homesters replied upon the same team as last week with one exception, F. Hitch taking the place of Alf Gardiner. Gibson won the toss, and Lannan kicked off for the visitors with the sun in their faces. They immediately attacked, Stephens being called upon to save in less than a minute from the start, three well-meant shots being fisted out in fine style by the home custodian. Settling down the homesters had the best of matters during the next few minutes. Ken, taking the ball from the other end of the field, passed to Merritt, who banged in a beauty, which Smith got well away. A corner fell to the O’s just after, but nothing resulted from the free kick. The visitors now took up the attack, and but for the accurate kicking of Dyke and Marriott, the homesters’ backs, would certainly have scored on more than one occasion. After some give-and-take play in mid-field the visitors broke away, and were unfortunate in not scoring, a well-meant shot striking the upright, Stephens getting the ball away with difficulty.

A mighty contest between the Orient and Leeds United, captured in The Sunday Illustrated for 2 October 1921. β€œA Clapton Orient forward beating a Leeds United opponent in a heading contest for the ball. The Orient were in great form and won by four to two.” #lofc #lofcpress

A black-and-white photograph of a football match, originally published in The Sunday Illustrated on 2 October 1921. It shows three players, one playing for Leeds United in pale-coloured stripes and the others in the white shirts with dark chevrons of Clapton Orient. On the left hand side, the Leeds United player is caught in the action of missing a header; he is leaning slightly to the left, with one arm bent at the elbow and the other stretched out to the right. His hair is standing up from his head. In the centre, a Clapton Orient player is also caught in mid-air. He is leaning back as he heads the ball, which is to the left of him in the shot. His arms are stretched down at 45-degree angles from his body. On the right, closest to the camera, is a Clapton Orient player with his back to us. He looks as if he is also leaping up, with both feet off the ground, one of them bent at the knee. Behind them are two other blurred footballers, and behind them a packed terrace. The caption reads: β€œA Clapton Orient forward beating a Leeds United opponent in a heading contest for the ball. The Orient were in great form and won by four to two.”
