Like the apocryphal butterfly that flapped its wings and caused a hurricane halfway across the world, a faint trace of impurities in a prebiotic catalytic reaction could have induced the left-handed nature of all biological molecules.

Like the apocryphal butterfly that flapped its wings and caused a hurricane halfway across the world, a faint trace of impurities in a prebiotic catalytic reaction could have induced the left-handed nature of all biological molecules.
In the beginning, there were chiral molecules. RNA, DNA, proteins, and other biological molecules tend to be present as only either right- or left-handed. However, scientists are not sure how this homochirality emerged.
Enantiomeric molecules that are chiral only because of substituents that have different carbon isotopes can generate chirality in asymmetric autocatalysis—a reaction in which a chiral product does double duty as a chiral catalyst for its own production.
How single chirality emerged on Earth is a multilayered mystery that captivates scientists seeking to understand the origins of life.
Thanks to Bernadette Broderick for visiting #wsuchemistry this afternoon and sharing her research on new tools to study ice chemistry including her lab’s Chirped-Pulse ICE (CPICE) instrument. BTW, Prof Broderik is a WSU alum and earned her PhD in chemical physics. #chemsky

This year's #NobelPrize in Chemistry was awarded for research which helps chemists make just one of a molecule's pair of mirror images 🪞 It's useful in making medicinal molecules and gives insights into why biological molecules are formed from single mirror-image building blocks 🧬

Researchers have shown that chiral solvents can act as the sole source of handedness in several catalytic reactions that preferentially produce a single enantiomer.
The pharmaceutical services company Inductive Bio has launched Indy, an AI assistant that it says can check assay data, analyze structure-activity relationships, and handle other recurring medicinal chemistry tasks.
