For #BannedBooksWeek, we’re sharing books that affirm Black life, challenge oppression, and help us imagine freedom.

Read Black women. Keep their stories in circulation. Find our full reading list on Instagram @harrietsdreams. Which Black woman writer changed how you see the world?

Today's BANNED book: A Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. Anne's words are powerful. It's why people have been working to ban the book since it was first published & why others have worked even harder to stop them.

ALA stands with library workers, readers, and communities working to keep books available. Our work helps ensure everyone can seek information and make their own reading choices. Your gift makes that work possible.

Helps us protect the freedom to read at ala.org/protect.

Author Jason Reynolds didn't spend much time in libraries as a child, but as an adult he found an anchoring point in them.

Reynolds is the author of many award-winning titles. Two of his books appear on ALA's list of the Top 150 Most Challenged Books https://bit.ly/4jJJxiQ

As #BannedBooksWeek 2026 comes to an end, I ask: is the way we mark the event merely prompting us to think about how crazy and censorious the past was, with no real reflection on the present?

#BannedBooksWeek “Nineteen Eighty-Four. Brave New World. Fahrenheit 451. The Handmaid's Tale. To Kill a Mockingbird. The reason for these books' ubiquitous presence in BBW displays all over the UK is obvious: They're not at all - in 2026 Britain - actually radical, and thus are completely toothless.
