October's theme: Japanese Ghost Stories
UTAGAWA KUNISADA (1786 – 1865), “Onoe Shōroku I as the Ghost of Princess Osakabe”, 1814.
Story in ALT.
#arthistory #art #Japan #Ghosts

The full title is “Onoe Shōroku I as the Ghost of Princess Osakabe, haunting Hayakawa Takakage on the battlements of Himeji Castle”.
Utagawa Kunisada was wildly popular as an artist of book illustrations, sumo wrestlers, beautiful women and kabuki and actor woodblock prints. He was a prolific printmaker and was quite the artistic trendsetter in trying new and different styles in his art production. This Kunisada print of the highly acclaimed Kabuki actor, Onoe Shōroku, commemorates the actor’s most famous performance in 1814. The play, “Shōroku’s Revival of the Story of Princess Osakabe”, tells the tale of the Princess, who is a yokai (supernatural being) haunting Himeji Castle. Osakabe lives in the tallest tower of the castle and meets the castle lord once every year to tell him his fortune. She hates people and is usually depicted as a giant spirit. In the Kabuki play, the warrior Hayakawa Takakage confronts the 16-foot tall apparition of Princess Osakabe on the battlements of Himeji Castle. Shōroku, the famous actor, specialized in portraying supernatural, phantom and female ghost roles. In this 1814 performance, he was 70 years old. He played the role to immense crowds; Shōroku was so scary that a child eyewitness reportedly told a reviewer that he was absolutely terrified and “it was awful not being able to escape because of the huge crowd”. The role of Princess Osakabe was physically very taxing and Shōroku died the year following this performance.

A West Indian Girl by Augustus John, 1940, Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales (oseven national museums located across Wales)

#ArtHistory #ModernArt #PostImpressionism

The artwork presents a close-up portrait of a young woman with distinct features. She possesses dark, wavy hair that cascades down her shoulders, framing her face. Her complexion is warm and the artist has meticulously accentuated her eyes, which gaze directly at the viewer, conveying a sense of strength and calmness. Her lips are painted with a rich, bold color that adds vibrancy to her serene expression. The background is a blend of soft, abstract brushstrokes in shades of blue, green, and beige, which complement and highlight the subject’s features. The woman is dressed in a simple garment with a dark bow at the neckline, emphasizing her poised and dignified appearance.

I painted the air between the figures, not just the figures. The space between things is where the truth often stands.

After the Morphine (The Morphine's Girl) Santiago Rusiñol, 1894, Cau Ferrat Museum (Sitges, Spain)

#ArtHistory #ModernArt #Expressionism

In 1894, during his third and last trip to in París, Rusiñol painted two very similar canvases whose protagonist was a very thin and sickly girl. "Before the Morphine" shows her sitting on her bed, looking at a small shiny obiect she is holding in her hands. In "After the Morphine," the model is lying on the bed under the effects of the morphine she has taken.

Despite not being the same size (the first is larger than the second), both paintings capture the before and after of the same sequence.

Vuillard stacks The Clarac Room in vertical bands - display case after display case - so your eye ricochets between that dark central vase and a pale statuette hiding upper right. Fine art print available at meisterdrucke.com. #art #Vuillard #Nabis #ArtHistory #meisterdrucke

Edouard Vuillard's painting The Clarac Room, an oil on canvas showing figures in profile and a woman in a wide-brimmed hat examining antiques in a shop crowded with glass display cases. Behind the vitrines are rows of ceramic vases, small figurines, urns and statuettes in muted olive, ochre, brown and dusty rose tones. A dark bronze-toned vase sits centrally on a pedestal, while a pale white statuette is visible in the upper right shelf. Small framed paintings and objects line the top of the composition, an
