Black words on a light purple background read: I stare into my soup, willing it to boil. Now that my bowl was assembled, it wouldn’t be as good reheated. I had only taken a bite, but my appetite evaporates until it is steam gusting from my ears. Color drains from my vision until the food is a taupe blur. There are no thoughts that remind me to be good; there is no impulse that freezes my arm from swiping the bowl to the floor. Noodles slop against the wall, warm broth splashes my ankles, and I don’t check if the bowl has broken badly, but glare at the table where my dinner once was.

From Epic Fantasy WIP, Waking the Saints. A borderlands horsewoman carried the news. Weather, starvation, and enemy movements threaten the King’s army.

“Brave Tam, how shall we get your message to the king? After this storm, the river may rise too high for even for faithful horse to cross.” “Bumblebutt would lock her knees if I tried,” admitted Tam. “My best horseman could make the attempt.” Lord Sintebfin pressed his hands against the table. “And if they can’t cross, he’s also an excellent archer. If we can tie a message to the arrow, we could get it into the hands of a villager to carry it further.” “If it has my seal on it, I know the lord at the bridge crossing will get it to the king and my grain wardens,” said the plainsman baron. Lualih nodded. “I think that could work. They just have to make it past the bandits outside the city walls.” She waved to her servant. “Bring us waxed parchment and ink. We have work to do.” Lualih spared a thought for the bandits swarming the roads before the task of crafting the message consumed her attention.

Querying agents is triggering a lot of Prom Drama. So many beautiful partners, none of them interested in me, and you can only imagine what that's doing to my self-image. I remain optimistic in a manner medically indistinguishable from delusion.
