Now he had an hour and a half to kill, and after a brief moment’s consideration, he decided to leave the station altogether. He crossed the road to a public park and sat down on a bench. It was a fine day, sunny and warm. Had it been the weekend, he was sure someone would have been performing on the bandstand in the middle of the park, but it was a Monday during work hours. Not that half the city was not unemployed. Somebody ought to be performing, to lift the spirits of passers by.

The park was falling badly into disrepair, the paint on the benches peeling, and there was a hole in the roof of the bandstand. The pond was overgrown, and on a windy day just after Mardi Gras a tree had toppled over that nobody had yet bothered to remove. Trash was strewn across the lawn, which had not been mowed since before the winter. People who had lost their homes probably slept here sometimes. The whites only park a block away he knew to be in a much better state. All the same, in the spring sunshine, none of that seemed to matter very much. A pleasant day was a pleasant day, even in surroundings such as these.

Alastor pulled a brown paper bag out of his pocket. Inside were several cookies that Niffty had presented him with before he left home that morning, and he tried one. In truth, they were a bit too sweet for his liking, but she had looked so proud when she gave them to him that he had not had the heart to refuse. It seemed rude not to at least eat one. It was not so bad; she seemed to have flavoured them with coffee, lending a pleasant bitterness to the otherwise sweet treat.

Off to the side, a rustling noise could be heard, and Alastor glanced up to find a small child standing there, staring at him with eyes too big for its face. It was impossible to determine its age or sex through the dirty clothes and matted hair. The rustling noise, it seemed, had been the child’s shoes, which at a glance seemed to be made of cardboard and newspaper. Tolerably functional in weather such as this, but God help the child if it rained. Dust and grime had turned its dark skin slightly grey.

‘Hello,’ said Alastor, smile unwavering. The child blinked, but did not respond, continuing to stare at him. ‘Oh, dear. You’re not very good at this, are you? I’m afraid most people aren’t terribly likely to give you anything just because you stare at them sadly.’

The child blinked again, but this time it spoke. ‘Why not?’ Its voice was high and breathy.

‘Because people are, by nature, quite selfish. They tend to look after themselves and their own interests. A sad, filthy child will only make them obstinate as they wrangle with their societally enforced guilt. In the long run, perhaps you might learn to perform. A sad orphan child who sings and dances, now there is something people enjoy.’

‘I ain’t no orphan,’ said the child.

‘Oh, but you will get far more out of people if they believe you are,’ said Alastor. ‘So here is what you say: “Please, mister, my momma died of a fever last winter and I ain’t had nothin’ to eat in days! Can’t you please spare me somethin’?”’ He made his voice high and breathy and affected a broad accent.

The child giggled. ‘That really work?’

Alastor shrugged. ‘It worked for me at times. Try it.’

The child screwed up its face, eyes going improbably wide and lip trembling, and said, ‘Please, mister, can’t you spare me somethin’? My momma died of a fever last winter and I ain’t had nothin’ to eat in days!’

‘Very good!’ said Alastor and held out the bag of cookies. ‘Go ahead. I’m not one for sweets anyhow.’

The child took the bag with both tiny hands, opened it and looked inside. ‘Thank you, mister!’

‘You’re quite welcome.’ Alastor reached into his pocket and pulled out a quarter. ‘Take this as well. Give it to your guardian, unless you think they’ll spend it on booze, in which case you ought to buy something useful with it.’ He flicked the coin in the child’s direction, and the child caught it with lightning reflexes. Perhaps it had the makings of an acrobat, or a musician.

Pocketing the coin, the child gave him another wide-eyed stare before running away, undoubtedly concerned that Alastor might demand the quarter or the cookies back. It was learning already.
