Large black text reads “October is Canada Library Month!” on a warm orange-to-yellow background. Red maple leaves are scattered throughout the design. At the centre is a large stylized maple leaf filled with binary code, surrounded by four digital devices displaying colourful Canadian-themed book illustrations. The NNELS logo appears in the bottom right corner.

An accessible document is a document that people with a range of physical and cognitive impairments can read and understand.

An accessible document is, typically, also a document that people with no physical or cognitive impairments can read and understand better, and faster.

A recent experiment explores what an AI-powered screen reader could look like. It also highlights how AI-enabled accessibility tools must be developed responsibly with persons with disabilities at the center.

I also share this concern. I don’t attribute malice to the article, but I do feel this problem is viewed as “solvable” by Microsoft leadership.

They don’t care that it’s unusable. They care that they cover their butts legally and they don’t have to pay expert salaries. Reference MS #a11y layoffs.

WCAG has skip links. But what about 500 lines of code? Neil Osman asks whether screen reader users need a bypass mechanism WCAG doesn't address.

Web HIG tip #1: Never use optimistic UI for destructive actions.

If the user hits Delete, wait for the server to confirm — don't pretend it worked and hope.

Accessibility checks worth automating. 235 lines of Python and Playwright that run axe-core against any URL and dump a JSON report. --axe-rules wcag2a for targeted runs. Intermediate level.

Can everyone read what you publish?
Quarto already helps: 'axe: true' checks a preview, 'pdf-standard: ua-1' tags the PDF, and 'fig-alt' now reaches the PDF too.

For slides, Reveal.js A11y adds the rest.

The median web page has 8 images — and 5 of them have no alt text. Measured across 26.2M pages in our live crawl: the web is still largely invisible to screen readers. Accessibility isn't a feature, it's the missing baseline. cl0q.com/explore #a11y #webdev

A color illustration of Tera, a dinosaur-headed teenage girl, listening to music on headphones with a big toothy smile while holding up her arms mid-dancePanel 1: Tera, a dinosaur-headed teenage girl with T. Rex head, looks fretful and panicked in dull waiting room. She has a chipper human-headed teenage girl pal.
Tera: I’m so nervous about my driving test!
Pal: Aw, you’ll be fine!
Panel 2: Interior of car through front window. Tera tightly grips steering wheel. She’s buckled in for safety, sweating bullets. In the front passenger seat is a bland driving instructor with large glasses in a suit, holding a clipboard and pen, ready for judgement.
Instructor: Put it in gear, please.
Panel 3: Outside of the car, which smashed into a tree in the background and caught fire spectacularly. A wheel's in the grass and other car parts scattered around the tire tracks leading to the tree. The car itself frowns sadly. Nearby, Tera, unharmed, looks embarrassed. The instructor has all of his limbs but has tattered clothes and a tiny portion of his hair on fire. He’s furious and pointing directly at Tera in a very exaggerated fashion.
Instructor: FAIL!A Princess Pups comic by Lindsay Hornsby
Panel 1: Fluff Pup and TeaCup Pup are working attentively on large lumps of modeling clay. TeaCup Pup is sitting directly on the table while working. Several sculpting tools and an open bucket of clay sit on the table.
Panel 2: A very ta-da feeling panel where Fluff Pup and TeaCup Pup look delightedly at their sculptured art. Fluff Pup has made a vase that appears somewhat inspired by art of ancient Greece with delicate triangular patterns at the top of the vase and a dignified dog standing in the middle. Meanwhile, TeaCup Pup has sculpted a dog with eyes closed majestically, head tilted up and long, flowing fur that covers the feet.
Panel 3: Fluff Pup and TeaCup Pup are staring confused and a little puzzled further down the table. It’s revealed Scruffy Pup is laying on her back actively rolling back and forth on her modeling clay. She's having the time of her life, happy expression and her tongue sticking out as lumps of clay stick to her fur.An illustration by Lindsay Hornsby of a blue Space Pirate Raptor swinging out of his golden space pirate ship. He's furiously coloring a satellite floating in space using a giant yellow crayon. Various rocks and planets float about as the Space Pirate Raptor gives a toothy grin that shows off his golden tooth. A nearby buggy alien with fly-like wings looks very annoyed and is yelling about this interruption
