Today’s devotional
#devotional

Proverb 13:12 (NKJV): Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.

The Hebrew word that is translated “hope” is derived from the word meaning “to wait”. It contains the idea of patience. I think that is why hope is so difficult: it requires waiting and being patient. All my life I have grown up in a “now” world. I want dinner “now”, so I toss a pre-made dinner in the microwave. I want some toy “now”, so I whip out the credit card. I want it “now”, so things have been created to make things more instant. The “now” culture ends up making things more streamline by using things that are not completely healthy to us. The microwave dinners have all sorts of chemicals in them to help preserve them and make them easier to cook quickly. Too much debt will bring about negative consequences on our lives. Things built too quickly do not last and wear out quickly. The same is true in our spiritual lives. The microwave solution is usually very temporary and can do lasting harm to our relationship with God and others. When we learn to be patient and wait on the LORD, we learn more deeply the love and care that God brings into our lives. When we wait upon the LORD our God, we find ourselves learning how to live in the forgiveness and peace that is offered us. When we learn to wait upon the LORD our God, we find that find life more abundantly. We find moments of joy in our lives. We find moments of obedience in our lives. We find moments of love in our lives. Today, may we start to wait more on the LORD our God and live out of the love and mercy already given to us.

Jehovah’s Witnesses say the Holy Spirit is just God’s active force.

But in Acts 5, Ananias lied to the Holy Spirit — and Peter calls it lying to God.

Acts 5 proves the Spirit is a person… and divine.

“Impression management” is nothing new.

Ananias and Sapphira wanted to look more generous than they were.

The early church learned quickly: God sees past the image we project.

Acts 5

1 John 3:24 (NKJV): Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.
In the verse before today’s, John says that the commandments are to believe on the name of Jesus and love one another. The Greek word that is translated “keeps” means “to guard”. It is a guarding from loss or injury; it is not the guarding that requires captivity or structures. We guard love by making sure that it is truly love. We make sure that we are truly living out of agape love and not out of desires and lusts. We make sure that the love we are guarding is centering God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit and not ourselves or someone else. We need to find places to stay that show the forgiveness and mercy of Jesus. We need to find places to stay that allow us to live out lives that bring joy and wholeness into our lives and into the lives of those around us. We need to find places to stay that allow us to know the power and strength of the Holy Spirit dwelling in us. We learn to guard faith so that it can be lived out fully with others. We learn to guard faith so that it can bring healing. We learn to guard faith as an act of worship for God. Today, may we more fully live into the agape love of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Judgment Seat or Mercy Seat?

1 John 2 says Jesus is the propitiation for our sins.

His blood turns the judgment we deserve into mercy.

Is the lid of the Ark a judgment seat or mercy seat for you?

A man is healed after 38 years…

and the leaders care more about their rules than the miracle.

John 5 shows how religious people can use the “rules” as a smokescreen when their real problem is who Jesus claims to be.
