Music can help us to channel the emotions of a scene we're writing, it can also be nice just have accompaniment while we work.

If you don't use playlists, no worries. Talk about any music you use!

Background: A photo of a bramble with a white flower and blurry green foliage.
Foreground: Two yellow text boxes, a larger centred one and a smaller one beneath that which reads: "Photo by Ivar Leidus".

Large Box Text:
September 7th

A lot of writers have playlists for their WIPs. Take the song from it you've listened to the least and explain why you added it. Then tell us why you don't listen to it.

In a nod to unoriginal D&D campaigns, Prophecy 71 has Plothük, a guy who sits in a shadowy corner of a tavern and asks the MCs if they want a job. It turns out he's peddling an MLM, not offering mercenary work.

I don't think I have any little games in my writing. I have Easter eggs for those in the Know (aka people who have played ttrpgs with me) and I try to give my characters thematic names, but that's about as whimsical as I get. 😅

I love this sort of stuff and use it heavily, as The Duel is a comedy with metafictional elements. There's a 4th wall break on the first page of 1660.

1660 avoids direct 2nd person address but I do have it in the 1661 1st draft currently, after I went "fuck it, why not".

You see, Young Mr. Aldridge, who had been educated in Amsterdam by the sort of philosopher who wrote in private of gelijkheid, who imagined himself devoted to the New Science, who longed someday to be recorded as the prophet of a better age to come, nevertheless had more than something of the seigneur in him, that took it as an insult that any knave should starve in his demesne. The expedition had been a failure: he was more restless now than when he’d begun.

#WhimsicalWriters Woops, missed this yesterday!

My favorite little game to play with readers are the little bits of foreshadowing, especially when it comes to name meanings. I also like dropping little scent notes about the characters because it's not often used to describe people.

My favorite ever that made me throw the book across the room and cackle my ass off was the scene introducing “Tunbridge Wheels” in Mortal Engines, because it was a rapid-fire string of one absurdity after another🤣🤣🤣

But in my own work, I always enjoyed Talia’s mental whiplash😅

She began to reconsider her situation, lamenting the semi automatic pistol she had had to leave in her father’s care for legal reasons. At the moment, she was armed only with a couple of knives, one of which was quite fragile. Eventually, her car bumped to a stop next to a tree stump in a small, dismal clearing in the isolated and ever thickening woods.
Here, a neglected trailer shored itself up against a pair of trees that also leaned. Out front were a few more stumps, rough cut to similar heights. Assorted bones, antlers, and stones were scattered across various surfaces like the aftermath of some gruesome havoc. Ghastly curtains of raw animal hides were draped from one of the trees, and other pieces were piled on a rotting old table. Flies buzzed. There was a stained bucket under a tree containing a foul taupe colored liquid. She even thought she saw the naked ribcage of some large animal emerging from the tall weeds, drying to a stiff brown several yards away in the looming darkness under the trees.
Talia felt instantly at ease and in a fond kinship with whoever lived here.
She stepped out of the car, smiling at the distinct glass-like tinkle of the stone flakes that crunched under her boots. She made her way toward what was clearly the central outdoor workspace, a worn stump surrounded by a thick ring of sharp flakes in a rainbow of bright mineral colors.
A face popped suddenly into the doorway, startled at having a visitor. He did not look much different than he did on the postcard

The lead character of #ElementalGuardians Book 3 is an young stuntwoman getting her first leading role in a TV series. She's this universe's equivalent of The Pink Ranger. Her name is Kim and her agent is Jen. Both are nods to iconic Pink Rangers.

#WhimsicalWriters considering Lemony Snicket was foundational for me, yes, I love this sort of thing. Everything I write has little easter eggs and references, mostly to keep myself amused. The most recent was Chin-Mae in Omega Squad, a helpful, pathological liar whose name means "truthful"

@norashear.bsky.socialSep 5, 2026, 7:09 PM

From other writers, I adore snarky footnotes & asides.

For my own writing, I love adding funny foreshadowing in chapter titles that make ppl groan when they reread. No Dream Like Forever has some good ones, but they're spoilers.

Chapter titles.

Some of my favorites:

-What Have You Done?
-Guilty Until Proven Innocent
-Fallout
-Change in Perspective
-Slithering in the Depths
-The Fools Come Rushing In
-Experiment's End

Sometimes, it's a play on words, a double entendre, or exactly what is written.

#WhimsicalWriters For a long time, I'd wanted to write a story where the characters were named after foods. And though I think most English-speaking readers would assume such a story would be cute/cozy, I was actually inspired to do it thanks to DBZ where the Sayans have vegetable names, lol.

This mostly comes through my narrator/character bleed moments, and Cry Wolf had a particularly blatant one I enjoyed. It's absolutely both sides of Rieka's mind fighting.
#WhimsicalWriters

She didn't know what to do! She couldn't talk about anything that mattered, and all she could tell Jiya was the apology wasn't necessary. Rieka knew she was being rude, but she was trying to detach! She'd made a mistake, and needed to fix it.
Why was she helping at Rita's, then?
SHUT IT. Rita did her a favor. She owed her.
Uh huh.
"Rieka, I'm so sorry I hurt you."
Oh for fuck's sake. She couldn't take that voice. It was weak and low, when the owner was normally so strong and vibrant.
"...Please? Let's help Rita out? And... if you can stand it, we could talk after?"

I was gonna try to share this on Sustember, but it kinda fits here XD I have tons of foreshadowing--usually more subtle--but one of the most noticeable things I do is redact a lot of information that'll get revealed later. It's a fun way of using a database theme for the book~

#WhimsicalWriters I have to invent a lot of heroes/villains and deities names for my WIP, and my approach to this is: “how can I make a pun so awful that the knee-jerk reaction of any sane reader when they see That would be to cross the screen and throttle me?” And then I do it. I’m a professional.

@thebrambler13.bsky.socialSep 5, 2026, 1:08 PM

I use pun or referential names. A good example of a pun is Madarch from The Lake Hopper, whose name means "mushroom". As for references there's Myrddin, Pere(dur), Teyrnon, Cei and Bedwyn.

Even Ata's "bear-girl" title is a reference.

Some of my fav foreshadowing that makes you 🤦 while replaying is from the game Ghost Trick, but it's too spoilery to describe.

So I'll go with the punny names from the Ace Attorney series. Winston Payne. Frank Sahwit (crime witness). Dick Gumshoe (detective).

And so on.

Well, let's see. In TY4LM we have narrator Dylan Jones. His father is DAVID Jones. The strange new family is the REQUIEMS🦈. (Hm odd how did that shark emoji get there couldn't possibly be related.) Marin and Nerissa's father is TORA🐅yuki REQUIEM🦈. (It keeps happening! 😉)
