#Arachtober 1: the lights on this pedestrian bridge create giant spider shadows! The casters are the appropriately named bridge spiders, _Larinioides sclopetarius_.

#DailySpiderPic #spiders #orbweavers #Araneae #Araneidae

A pedestrian bridge by night, with downward-facing lights set underneath the wooden railings. A spider has built its web directly beneath one, creating a giant spider shadow on the walkway.A further-out view showing the bridge curving away, with dozens of similar lights. An orbweaver spider at the centre of its symmetrical, wheel-like web. It has a darker leaf-like marking (the folium) on the top side of its abdomen which looks a little like a fleur-de-lys.

“Frogs, bats, spiders, and dragonflies are more than just creatures we happen to find around our homes and fields. They are part of the natural system that helps keep insect populations in check.

A frog can consume large numbers of insects, bats feed on flying insects, and spiders capture countless prey in their webs. Even dragonflies contribute at an earlier stage of their lives: their aquatic nymphs eat mosquito larvae and other small aquatic organisms.

None of this means nature’s predators can eliminate every pest, or that agriculture can simply stop using pesticides. Ecosystems are far more complicated than that. But it does show why indiscriminate chemical use can have consequences beyond the insects we are trying to control.

When pesticides affect beneficial predators and pollinators along with pests, we can end up weakening some of the very organisms that help ecosystems function.

That’s why protecting habitat matters.

Healthy wetlands give amphibians and dragonflies places to reproduce. Native plants provide food and shelter for insects, birds, and other wildlife. Reducing unnecessary chemical use gives beneficial species a better chance to survive and continue doing what they have evolved to do.

Nature already has its own pest-control network.

Sometimes the best thing we can do is protect the habitat that allows that network to keep working.”

A giant house spider (Eratigena atrica, one of the UK's largest spiders), loitering nonchalantly near my kitchen door this Autumn 🌱

Large brown hairy house spider with dark longitudinal stripes on the front part (carapace) and a patterned, mottled abdomen.

You can come indoors if you like pal just keep your head down and don't let the Mrs see you. I'd watch out for the cat too!

Fair warning, if you are not at all keen on our eight legged friends I would suggest muting the #Arachtober #Spider #Spiders #Arachnids hastags now 🌱😀

To be honest, I'm actually pretty scared of bugs. They're important, though, and while I like to keep a healthy distance, they deserve to be seen in a positive light

In your house this autumn..

Giant House Spiders:

They’re quick, they skitter, but don’t panic!! - they may look big with long hairy legs, but they're more interested in escaping from people than scaring us…

Another shot from yesterdays walk with the 60mm macro.

I take a lot of spider photos but rarely post them because I'm a slave to the themes of the day 😀

There's a sprinkling of #WebWednesday tags here and there, so I think I'll hop aboard that one.

A mabel orchard orbweaver spider sits in the center of its web, still spinning as you can see a web coming out of its body. Behind is pure green and the web strands stand out clearly.
