#SFFChat I mean. I've always been a werewolf guy. For all sorts of reasons, really. (Though my only published story with any sort of classic monster in it is a vampire.)

But my favorite horror movie is, I am not trolling here, this is genuine, The Truman Show.

#SFFChat: I don't write a lot a horror, so I'll take the second question. I think Penelope, the main character of a short story I am working on, would be doing some sort of creative couples costume with her girlfriend. I could definitely see them doing a Sailor Neptune/Sailor Uranus duo.

#SFFChat: Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is a book that I think about A LOT, and one of the first horrors I really loved and made me start coming around on the genre.

I've also recently been getting a bit into the work of Cassandra Khaw.

#SFFChat: I think fiction in general is a good way to think about the world through a different lens. Horror and monsters are a way to confront our fears (literal or methaphorical) in a very controlled way.

Hi #SFFChat!

I'm Kelsey (she/fae) and I write poetry, fiction, and ttrpgs.

As for my favourite monster, I do love a good vampire story!

I've written a few horror short stories that I think work pretty well, but the scariest is probably a scene in StS that I have mentioned often: the fight in a swamp against a vicious character who is undead and modifies her own body with parts from other people throughout the scene.

I honestly haven't read as much horror as I'd like to, but John Dies at the End by Jason Pargin/Davin Wong stands out to me because it's genuinely scary while also being genuinely funny, and neither of those is easy to do in prose. It's on of my favorite novels of any genre.

It's really up to the author, of course, but I think SFF lends itself well to horror because clear explanations aren't required - which is perfect because not knowing or understanding is an essential part of many kinds of horror. What is the monster's motive? How does it do th-☠️

Hello, friends, I'm Fox. I love weird/cosmic horror with monsters who defy human understanding. Werewolves are cool, too.
I also love psychological and body horror, so I really enjoyed The Thing and Altered States.

The scariest story so far is my story The Crash. It's in the Horror Writers Chat anthology.

I was worried with it being slasher vibes compared to other very scary stories in the anthology, but I do love it

#SFFChat Q4: What's the scariest thing you've ever written?

I think this is up there...

The giant roared again. It slammed its body against the cage. And this time, the cage shook.

“Can it get out?” Nadia asked.

Blair shook her head, “I don’t know. That’s a big cage. But that’s also an immortal giant. And I have no idea how strong such a thing would be.”

The giant lunged again and the cage tipped on its side. Blair launched to her feet, her saber in her hand. The giant lunged again and the door to the cage burst, hinges shattering and bars bending outward.

“It can’t get up here, can it?” Nadia asked.

Blair flinched at the question. “It can with enough interest. Don’t move.”

The giant scrambled from the cage. The guards raised flintlock rifles. Blair shook her head.
“Those guns are going to make it angry.” Blair muttered.

The giant squirmed free of the cage and the guards fired. Metal slugs struck the giant and blood erupted across the thing’s chest. The servants turned and fled. They ran, scrambling and stumbling across the stones of the courtyard. Blood dripped onto the snow. The giant moved, too fast for a giant. The giant snatched up a guard and crushed the woman like a dry leaf. The guard screamed, and then flopped, as the giant flung the body away. Several guards lunged with spears. The giant leaped back, dodging the thrusting spears. Blair had never seen a giant move like this. The great beast danced on the snow as though it were weightless. The speed and strength of an immortal coupled with the size and raw power of a giant. Blair shivered. She looked back at Nadia, who cringed behind her. Blair felt a pang at leaving the guards to be slaughtered. But she wouldn’t leave Nadia and wouldn’t risk drawing the giant’s attention.
Below, the giant tore the guards apart with desperate ease. When the last of the guards fell, the giant padded about the courtyard. It sniffed the ground and put a nose to the wind. The giant selected a guard and began to tear the armor from the corpse. Once it had removed the armor, the giant devoured the body, clothing and all.

Blair and Nadia remained still. Blair kept her breathing under control. But she could hear Nadia’s shaky breathing behind her. Immortals had heightened senses. Would the giant hear them? Smell them? Would it care?

The giant looked towards them on the ramparts. Blair held her breath. The giant seemed not to notice them. It began to inspect the bodies of the guards once more. The giant tore the armor off two more guards and devoured them. Then it examined the cage that had contained it. The giant sniffed the cage. Then it tipped it this way and that, peering through the bars.
“Why doesn’t it leave?” Nadia hissed.

The giant turned towards the sound.

The women froze.

The giant cocked its head and heaved the cage to the side. It looked up at them as they stood on the ramparts. The giant took several steps forward, sniffing the air. The beast’s eyes narrowed. It had taken note of them. The giant growled, low in the back of its throat. Blair eased a hand into her pouch and drew out her caltrops- both the plain and the silver ones. The giant took several steps closer. It sniffed the air again. And then it bellowed and launched itself forward towards the wall where they stood.

Two came to mind instantly and I can't be made to choose between them.

Cassandra Khaw
Gerald Brom

Both of them write such fantastic works but are so different from each other. I've read a lot from both and I'm always eager to read new stuff from them both.

My favourite authors are the ones in the Horror Writers Chat tag on here.

I love all my horror friends!

There have been some very scary stories from people this year!

Read the HorrorWritersChat anthology, it's on Amazon. Some very good stories in there!
All proceeds go to charity.

Book title The Shadows that we carry, a horror anthology.
The background is black with a woman's face with her eyes closed and in orange and yellow flames.

Thanks for hosting! The new time works well for me though I'm posting a bit late.

As always check out my blog cfreak.dev or just follow me for dystopian sci-fi, tech rants, and pictures of cats. If I have any hope of getting an agent I probably need to get these numbers up! #SFFChat
