One summer, the pond turned green
algae the colour of uranium glass.
The faster it spread
the slower the ducks swam
until the pond looked like grass
and the ducks were gone.

I don't remember if it was the summer
before they dug up kids' bones
or one after.

Roadside crowds with
brown-eyed susans
late afternoon, late
sun low beams into glare.
Distraction at summer’s end,
I drive the bend to the low road
a nose, thin legs, spots
step out, a dream of a fawn
that isn’t a dream, smartly
steps back, disappears
into a crowd of yellow.

Depressed and lethargic I stare at the patch of dirt, daring it, urging it to deliver one sprout. Coffee in hand it is the first thing I check each morning, but it’s stubbornly refuses to become a Hyacinth.

I stare at the celling
I would have called but
No need for me to send a card
Your birthday passed you by again
Another year gone
And my years get closer to yours

I grow detached and alone
Depleted of love
I seek the warmth of your sun
Like a bulb waiting for spring

seasons have come

I can't remember
if there was a spring

I should stop writing
about it
nothing I say changes
the beauty of the past
or the pain of the present

it's all too big

I keep thinking,
maybe the next poem
can capture
the weight of it

don’t fall off
and all those
petals
in the water
sink to
the floor,
and they flutter
like twinkle
lights
like the eyes
of a broken,
naive girl
