It's looking like California's AI billionaires might be able to sink the California wealth tax proposition, even if it passes, by backing separate propositions that would invalidate it. #Prop40

www.the-downballot.com/p/morning-di...

The Public Policy Institute of California says 52% of respondents plan to vote “yes” on Proposition 40, which would levy a one-time 5% tax on residents with a net worth of $1 billion, with 46% against.

But the proposal’s detractors—like Google co-founder Sergey Brin, who is funding an organization to oppose the wealth tax—have a plan in place to stop it even if “yes” prevails. Brin’s side is backing a pair of initiatives that would prevent the wealth tax from going into effect should either receive more “yes” votes than Proposition 40.

PPIC finds that this strategy might work. A 51-44 majority supports Proposition 41, which Politico explains would “require audits of state spending while invalidating the wealth tax because of how it would allocate money.” An even larger 54-43 spread favors Proposition 42, which would stop the state from taxing assets like stocks and investment accounts.

I don't care about tech b-ill-ionaires opposing CA #Prop40. That's par for the course. I care about the #low-income #medical, #housing, #education, #CivilRights, #PublicService agencies that have concerns. What do they know that we need to understand before #voting?

Color screenshot with white background and mostly black text says:

Nonprofit and advocacy organizations opposing California's Proposition 40 (the one-time billionaire wealth tax) include Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, California YIMBY, Equality California, the NAACP California/Hawaii State Conference, the California Medical Association, and the California Business Roundtable.

Key Opposing Nonprofit & Advocacy Groups

Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California: Opposes the measure over concerns regarding long-term funding stability and fiscal mechanics.

California YIMBY: Argues the tax penalizes specific housing production models and risks driving capital out of the state.

Equality California: Joined civil rights coalitions in opposing the initiative due to potential budget instability risks.

NAACP California/Hawaii State Conference: Raised concerns regarding the broader economic and fiscal impacts on the state.

California Medical Association: Represents physicians and opposes the healthcare-linked funding structure of the tax.

California Business Roundtable: Represents major corporate employers opposing the retroactive wealth tax framework

No question it's time for the wealthy in #California to pay their #FairShare! The question is HOW. #Prop40 has detractors including Planned Parenthood, CA YIMBY, Equality CA, the NAACP CA/HI State Conference, the CA Medical Association pointing 👉 #UnintendedConsequences

I will be voting yes on Proposition 40 in California. The Billionaire Tax is one way for citizens to protest the power grab by the billionaire class in America. I see countless anti-40 commercials. Yes, billionaires have a lot of money to spend on campaigns - that's the problem.#Prop40

If you want to know how problematic Democrats and their ilk have become, all you have to do is look at #Prop40 in California. I just saw an ad where @ppfa.org @ppact.org of California and the @sfdemocrats.org are standing 10 toes against this tax.

Fuck billionaires and their defenders.
