Mercator keeps every shape true and pays for it in area: land at 82° north is drawn 51 times too big. At the same total area as Equal Earth, its poles balloon while Africa, South America and India shrink.

Charles was a civil engineer and banker who founded Imlay City along the Port Huron & Lake Michigan Railroad in 1870.

The Eastern Michigan State Fair has taken place here annually since 1883.

Boston sells itself as a colonial city, but fewer than 1 in 100 of its buildings are older than 1850. Most of the city went up between the 1880s and 1930. Only 1 in 20 is newer than 2000.
