A view looking west (just beyond Milecastle 39) along Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland, England on a cloudy July day. The remains of the stone wall follow the contours of the hills in the rolling countryside. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that marked the northern frontier of the Roman Empire for nearly 300 years. Construction began on the orders of Emperor Hadrian in AD 122. It took three legions, each consisting of 5,000 men as little as, perhaps, a decade to build. It runs for 73 miles from coast to coast (Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway) to with a 25 mile extension south through Cumbria. The area is known for its dramatic undulating landscape and well-preserved Roman forts. The iconic tree featured in the lower centre of the frame is the Sycamore Gap Tree, famously featured in the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. This sycamore tree was illegally felled in an act of vandalism in September 2023. Two men were arrested and charged with criminal damage. They were each given a prison sentence of four years and three months.
