It's only when you're afraid of life that you fear #death. It's only dead people who fear death

Thinking about the below quote a lot lately. These #billionaires wanting to live forever as they harm human beings. It’s because they are already dead inside

#human #life #tragedy #fear #evil #dead #💔

Can one be fully human without experiencing tragedy? The only tragedy there is in the world is ignorance; all evil comes from that. The only tragedy there is in the world is unwakefulness and unawareness. From them comes fear, and from fear comes comes everything else, but death is not a tragedy at all. Dying is wonderful; it's only horrible to people who have never understood life. It's only when you're afraid of life that you fear death. It's only dead people who fear death.
Anthony de Mello, "The Death of Me"

Fear is a political shortcut: it turns complexity into enemies and restraint into betrayal. The mature society is not fearless; it refuses to let panic decide who still counts as human. #Fear #Dignity

Delivered From All My Fears - Psalm 34:4 - What is your greatest fear? Seek the Lord's help in overcoming it. He will deliver you from that fear and replace it with His peace. #Fear #Love #Peace

Something a little different on the blog today. I dive into why I do things that scare me when I travel, from doing via ferratas as someone afraid of heights to trying to go with the flow as a travel control freak.

I #pray 2da frm #Psalm 111.10: Begin r #wisdom wth fearing U, dear #Christ! Does it help u make sense of fearing #Jesus tht the NRSV #Bible notes define "#fear of #God" as reverence or obedience? As I anticipate making ths my #prayer 2da, I feel humble. Tht strikes me as a good place 2 start. #PCUSA

Fear is easiest to govern when it has no expiration date. A society can remain technically free while learning to interpret every pause, question, and mercy as weakness. #Fear #Freedom

From the 1st book (our son was 12) to today - he's 19! He's off at college. Our family has been asking: how do we act with courage? With so much #fear in our world, we are called to heart #courage, keeping our focus on a noble #purpose. How are you leading with courage? #humanaissance

ALT TEXT FOR FULL POST:

By the way, this isn’t something that you, me, or anyone can just overcome with more discipline or intellect, except by learning to stay calm enough to widen our field of perception again.

Fear, as a function, alerts us to danger and narrows our attention to the things that seem relevant to solving the problem directly in front of us.

That doesn’t mean the information we perceive through fear is false. It means fear gives us a tightly cropped image of reality, emphasizing whatever might help us survive the immediate threat while screening out information that does not seem relevant.

That cropped image may be exactly what saves us in an emergency.

But complex problem-solving requires us to step back far enough to recover the information that fell outside the frame.

If you want to be the kind of person who solves complex social problems, you have to learn to be in a measured relationship with your fears.
