The squonk is the most miserable "fearsome" critter of American tall tales. Its skin is disgusting (all covered in warts, blisters, and abrasions), and the squonk knows this. Thus, the creature hides underground during the day and at night is constantly crying as it hunts for food.

The church referred to in the rhyme 'Oranges & Lemons' is thought to be London's St Clement Danes. These fruits were once brought ashore at a nearby quay. In March, the church holds a ceremony in which oranges & lemons are handed out to schoolchildren. #FairytaleTuesday #folklore #gothic #history

Paul Bunyan is so enormous that American landscapes themselves became part of his legend. Later tales credited him and Babe the Blue Ox with creating lakes, rivers, and other landmarks. A tall tale doesn't merely exaggerate a man. It can exaggerate an entire continent. #FairyTaleTuesday

A #rhyme & #riddle in one.
As I was going to St. Ives,
I met a man with seven wives,
Each wife had seven sacks,
Each sack had seven cats,
Each cat had seven kits:
Kits, cats, sacks, and wives,
How many were there going to St. Ives?

The dungavenhooter is a fearsome critter of American tall tales that inhabits the marshes between Maine and Michigan. It resembles a crocodile, but lacks a mouth. Thus, a dungavenhooter pulverizes its victims to a fine powder, then snorts them through large nostrils.

Jack Be Nimble jumps over a candlestick, which sounds delightfully nonsensical today. But jumping over candles was once associated with games or fortune-telling traditions, where extinguishing the flame could mean bad luck. Childhood rhyme meets fire hazard. #FairyTaleTuesday

Recorded in early 1700s, this nursery #rhyme is believed to be much older.
Hark, hark! the dogs do bark,

Some in rags, some in jags,
And some in velvet gowns.

Aesop's 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf' has survived for centuries because its warning is brutally simple. Lie often enough and eventually nobody believes you, even when you're finally telling the truth. Some childhood lessons don't need magic to be frightening. #FairyTaleTuesday

This rhyme dates to at least the 16th century.
Hey Diddle Diddle,
The cat & the fiddle,
The cow jumped over the moon.
The little dog laughed,
To see such sport,
And the dish ran away with the spoon. redbubble.com/shop/ap/3537... #FairyTaleTuesday #illustration #art #folklore #fairytale

In this fable, a shipwrecked man blamed the sea for his troubles. The sea responded that it was not her but the wind to blame. The moral is not to trust those controlled by others.

Rats feared a cat & met to discuss. They decided they would put a bell on the cat, but no one wanted to do it. This fable from the middle ages gives us the phrase 'to bell the cat', meaning an impossibly difficult task. www.redbubble.com/shop/ap/3697... #FairytaleTuesday #art #illustration
