Oh, excellent point. Take them apart, and put them back together in lots of different ways. Flexibility is indeed key. #ElemMathChat

Yes! @triangleman.bsky.social 's work is incredible. I'm always geeking out over his new books, materials, and ideas!
And the idea that we can just talk to kids is so key! It's not rocket science. Well, actually... :)

Hi Kim! So happy you are here! Great to see you! #ElemMathChat
A2: Number walks - Find numbers in your environment (the classroom, the playground, walking in the neighborhood) #ElemMathChat
After “taking apart numbers and putting them back together” I would add “so you can use them flexibly.” I think many teachers think if they teach students how to take numbers apart and put them back they have number sense. Isolating number sense ideas is a common issue I see. #elemmathchat
A2: Student dialogue - Get kids sharing and debating with one another (Choose a number, convince your partner that it’s the BEST number) #ElemMathChat
@mfannie.bsky.social Do you want me to sign you up for this? It is our annual get together dinner! #ElemMathChat
A2: Connections to the real-world - (What numbers do you see at home? What numbers do you see in your community?) #ElemMathChat
A2: Open ended questions - (What’s your favorite number? What makes that number special?) #ElemMathChat
A2: I think you call attention to them. I know @triangleman.bsky.social has lots of example on his talkingmathwithkids.com blog - just have a normal convo with your kid, and lob a few numbers in and see what happens. #ElemMathChat
Hi Kim! So glad you're here with us tonight! #ElemMathChat
Yes. We often hear about Algebra as a major gatekeeper in students' mathematical careers, but Early Number Sense closes a lot of doors well before Algebra. #ElemMathChat
A2 I hope it is inspiring when I give them opportunities to play with numbers. I think there is more of this play feel when we do our warm ups - visual patterns, solvememobiles, number of the day...... but then they take this playful spirit into the formal lesson #ElemMathChat
I'm Kim from Math is Figureoutable, little south of Austin Texas. #elemmathchat
I do know that facility with taking apart numbers and putting them back together is super important and an indicator of future "success". #ElemMathChat
I love the metaphor. Well said! #ElemMathChat
I love this. It makes me picture all of the numbers we hear on a daily basis swirling around us like a tornado! If we have number sense we can calm the storm! #ElemMathChat
Q2: How do you inspire students to think about numbers? #ElemMathChat
Yes, yes, yes! I love Eric (Rico) Gutstein's book, Reading and Writing the World with Mathematics. He makes the same points about agency in his book. So powerful! #ElemMathChat
