A medium shot shows a Eurasian bittern taking off from a calm body of water, captured mid-flight as it leaves a large splash behind. The large, stocky bird has rich buff-brown plumage heavily patterned with dark brown streaks, bars, and a black cap. It is flying horizontally to the right with its broad, rounded wings spread, revealing a barred pattern on the wing feathers. Its long, yellowish-green legs and feet stretch out behind its body, and its sharp, dagger-like bill points forward. A dramatic column of water droplets and spray erupts from the surface of the lake directly below the bird, as another bird dives. Cool to see this cormorant catch some sort of long fish recently. The cormorant would try to get the fish in a good position to swallow but it would wrap itself around the cormorant’s bill in defiance! It did eventually get eaten though 😂

Nice to spot this passage Black-tailed Godwit recently. Always lovely birds to see and not too common up north. Managed some interesting size comparison shots between other waders on the beach

Pygmy nuthatches frequent our back yard, often in fairly large groups. They visit in sixes and sevens. The one in the photo pretty much hung out by itself throughout its time with us. In the shot I've chosen, the bird appears to be dancing along the edge of a grey table-top in from of the redwood uprights of our deck. Its wings are raised and blurred and the feathers of the wings are spread. The right foot of the bird is dipping down below the top of the table. The left foot of the bird may be resting on the table or perhaps it is represented as a yellow smear above the top of the top. The yellow legs/toes are blurred. The bird's lovely blue-and-white head is in focus. The bird's pastel orange belly and side are blurry, as is its tail.
