September 16, 1983, 43 years ago today: The descent into Sawyer Notch from Hall Mountain was long and steep, threading along a crumbling footway. The trail crossed a gravel lumber road and Sawyer Brook in that narrow, wooded valley.

Hauling a backpack up an almost impossibly steep trail climbing some gray rock cliffs high up a mountainside. A few spruce trees are clinging to the cliffs, and some leafy shrubs or saplings, several beginning to turn orange and gold. A wide stream winds through a very narrow notch hundreds of feet below. The very steep wooded slopes of another mountain rise from the other side of the stream. The sky is hazy and whitewashed.

September 15, 1983, 43 years ago today: When I finally attained that summit, I checked my watch and discovered that it was almost 9:00. I had consumed two hours in hiking two-and-a-half miles.

Beneath a bright, almost cloudless light blue sky we are looking out at a scene bathed in bright sunshine. We are standing atop a lofty mountain covered with light gray rock outcrops and boulders, stunted spruce and fir and a leafy alpine plant that has turned red with the autumn. The rocks are covered with pale green and darker green lichen. The crest descends to a low sag also covered with rock outcrops and alpine vegetation, then climbs to another peak of our mountain. That peak is more wooded, although there are open areas along the top and sides. The rest of the mountainsides are heavily wooded. There is another lofty mountain beyond this peak to the right. Its face is also heavily wooded but has extensive open rock cliffs. Other ranges cascade towards the horizon.

Beneath a soft blue early morning sky, we are standing on a lofty mountain, close to the bottom of a deep sag between two lofty peaks of a mountain. We are looking back towards the peak from which we have just descended. The sag is a landscape of naked gray granite terraces interspersed with low alpine vegetation and dwarf spruce and fir. The mountain's flanks are wooded. The vast majority of the crest along the two peaks and in the sag is naked gray granite or low alpine vegetation. Towards the bottom of the other peak is a Forest of weather-beaten spruce and fir around the height of a man, the spot where we took the previous picture.

September 14, 1983, 43 years ago today: Last night was wintry, topping even Monday night for cold. Today was a perfect backpacking day: about fifty degrees and sunny, with another invigorating breeze.

The top portion of the sky is clear and blue with some streaky clouds. The bottom has high haze with a few smaller low level clouds beneath. We are high atop a mountain looking down at a rock outcrop below us surrounded by a spruce fir forest. The forested slopes slant down towards another rock outcrop and then a narrow valley far below. On the other side of that valley stands another mountain a bit lower than this one. Its slopes are also heavily wooded, but there is much exposed granite on and around its summit. Beyond that more mountain ranges cascade to the horizon.
