And the propaganda against the Sixties Generation and its values, repeated endlessly over the decades, led to a media narrative that conservative ideas were winning and that, indeed, progressivism and idealism were silly impulses of a narcissistic generation. Whereas the opposite was what was actually true, such a narrative remains to this day, propped up by moneyed interests because it is convenient for their ends if the populace believes that. And even Democrats have come to subscribe to it over the years, with moderate supporters of Hillary Clinton justifying the slanted playing field against Bernie Sanders in 2016. With all these years convincing themselves that progressives cannot win — often using McGovern’s loss as the example — Clintonites ignored the polls showing Bernie Sanders as another transformational figure. Surveys done during the campaign showed such popular support for Sanders — perhaps even more so than for Barrack Obama earlier — that Sanders would have won in a head-to-head against Donald Trump and been even stronger than Hillary Clinton ended up being. And by the way, if progressives cannot win according to moderate Democrats, and the example of McGovern in 1972 is given, how is it that Barrack Obama won in the greatest Democratic landslide in half a century?
