To prevent a human soul from being condemned to this endless duty, a black dog could be buried first.

The belief was considerably older than the Victorian era, but it was still being recorded and discussed by nineteenth-century folklorists.

Its purpose was to protect sacred ground and the people buried there, particularly from anyone who intended to profane the churchyard.
