“Fooled you, didn’t I?”
Sitting in the stalled railroad car, Boden lowered the paper broadsheet he’d been half reading. A round little man in a badly patched gray waistcoat and frayed green trousers sat on the worn mahogany bench opposite Boden. Spectacles askew, hair unkempt, grin awry, he looked to be in his forties. Maybe fifties. A ragged cluster of dried bluerain blossoms was pinned to his lapel.
Boden, unimpressed, said, “I saw you slip into my compartment, if that’s what you mean.” Not that his entry could have escaped notice; the bronze door grated when it opened, with the sparkwork mechanism depowered.
“Excellent, excellent.” The little man held out a little hand. “Fimble Quinceberry, at your service, sir.”

I looked up, raindrops obscuring my vision.

Anthony leaned against the window frame casually. He reached out of view and pulled someone forward.

Peters.

The colonel had been handcuffed and stripped of weapons. Blood smeared the side of his face, thick and partially dried. He looked between Anthony and me, then at the distance between him and the sidewalk.

“Once I rip every military secret out of his brain, he’ll make an excellent addition to my team, don’t you think?” Anthony asked.

“You’re a sick bastard.” Oscar didn’t lower his gun.

Here is the sure to be widely useful “Rachel’s 3-2-1 Rule for Raunchy Comedies.” 😜

She’s a big fan of really trashy comedies and horror flicks, especially older classics.

“Want to watch a movie or anything?” Kyle asks. “We tried to find some raunchy comedies that you might like but weren’t sure.”
“Just have to remember Rachel’s 3-2-1 rule. At least 3 sets of bare breasts, 2 fart or poop jokes, and 1 animal dressed as or otherwise acting like a person. A movie does not need all three to be good, and those elements are not usually the best parts, but they are an excellent signifier for greatness the closer a movie comes to that ideal.”

My investigators have just gotten some REALLY interesting news from the lab.

“Excellent. We’ll be here when you’ve got it. I don’t want to get anyone overexcited just yet.”
“Thank you. I appreciate that.”
Charlie looked up at Jack with wide eyes as the phone clicked off. He had little to add to her confusion, just as startled as she was.

One Saturday practice, we got a decent volley going. We hadn’t started playing games yet, but she was able to sustain a volley for more than ten shots before we lost it. It was the first time we had reached double digits, and we ran to meet at the net in our excitement.
‘Did you see that?’
‘12!’
‘Yeah, Marin! You’re really improving!’
I put my hand up for a high five. I got arms wrapped around me instead.
‘Oh, hey, watch the net,’ I said with a laugh.
‘Thank you,’ she whispered into my neck.
‘For what?’ I laughed again, this time colored with a bit of unease. But, since she was hugging me, I couldn’t exactly pull away or anything. Not that I wanted to. So I rubbed her back. ‘You’re doing great, Marin. You’ve got no one to thank but yourself for that.’
She pulled back enough to look me in the eye. ‘That’s not true. You taught me.’
‘Well, maybe a little,’ I said, grinning.

I took another quick sip before continuing. “Look... Just tell Samuel that we need to talk. Everything’s gone to shit. [CENSORED], and Jack applauds your excellent work fucking up Prometheus. Tomorrow night, Pella’s in Sector 15. Ask for [CENSORED]. I get it if he wants to send someone else or doesn’t trust me, but one way or another, I’ll find him. The sooner the better.”

He had never seen a place so alive.

And something smelled amazing.

He glimpsed Akieryon for just a moment, disappearing between the trees with a tiny angel on his arm. Now, with the glorious cacophony before him, he lost sight of them. What an excellent place for a clandestine meeting.

Lord Albert’s face turned from amused to alabaster horror in seconds. His large, crystal blue eyes fell onto Eleanor once more. “My lady, you can’t possibly be serious.”

By then, Mick realized he’d lost control of the whole shebang. So when Eleanor leaned back in her chair and folded her arms, he let his own drop to his side and took a step back, eyes flicking from Lord Albert to his best friend and back.

“I am quite serious,” Eleanor replied. “Do tell. Is it the fact that Mick is a commoner? That he’s not from a family with as vaunted a reputation in the magical arts as yours? Because I assure you, the former hardly matters, and with regards to the latter, my family paid a considerable sum to get Mick trained in multiple forms of non-magical combat. From what I understand, he’s an excellent shot with a bow and arrow.”

Good morning friendos! We are live for #Sniptober a snippy game I put together to celebrate my birthday month! Starting off today with a snip of Cole, who is absolutely not the main character of Thawing the Line but deeply thinks he is. Bonus pic of this scene illustrated because it’s my favorite 😍

“Baby,” Blake said, amused, hands on his hips. “You good?”

Cole hopped up, mask slightly crooked, grin bright. “I am excellent. Boston is not ready.”

Blake stepped close and fixed his mask with gentle fingers. “Good. Then let's melt their faces off.”

Cole’s heart thumped hard enough to echo in his ribs. He leaned in, bumping their foreheads together, mask to mask.

They headed out toward the backstage hallway, Cole bouncing on his toes, kicking the air, feeling the nerves fizz in his veins.
Tonight was going to be wild.

Two men standing forehead to forehead. The taller man is pulling the shorter man closer and there’s a little sound effect noise that says “clak”
