When the snow goes in late February, nearly eight times as much water leaves Ukraine as on the driest day of late summer: about 17,500 m³/s against 2,300. Every river in the country, Crimea included, every day since January 2025.

There’s still time to join us for the Shropshire Rivers Hub Conference 2026 on the 12th October!

Whether you work with #rivers, manage land, are involved in #farming, run a #community project or simply care about the future of our waterways, we’d love to have you there.

Ireland has a pulse. At its autumn peak on 13 Nov 2025 the whole island put about 3,300 m³/s into the sea; on the quietest day of the year, just 370. Nine times more water in the wet months than the dry. #Ireland #rivers

Lessons from forests
-grow slowly, but deeply
-not everything needs sunlight to begin
-strength can be quiet
-stand tall, even in stillness
-let go, season after season
- you are allowed to take up spacelessons from rivers:
- keep moving, even when the path curves
- you don't have to rush to arrive
- flow around what resists you
- let go, as often as needed
- softness can carve tis own way
- trust the direction you're unfolding into

Last week, Prof Jamie Woodward spoke to The Verb on Radio 4 to discuss all things poetry, rivers and landscape changes. Why not have a listen this morning?

Every river in the Netherlands, every day since Jan 2025. A delta breathing, mostly the Rhine and Meuse passing through: flow to the sea sinks to ~160 m³/s in late summer, climbs to ~2,550 in winter, a sixteenfold swing. Data @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social #rivers #netherlands

Central Asia's rivers carry about 1,200 cubic metres a second in early February and about 14,500 nine weeks later, when the Pamir and Tian Shan snow goes. Almost none of it reaches an ocean.

A picture of a young woman sailing downstream in a red teacup. She’s surrounded by black clocks with shadows on the right hand sides of their faces. The time on all of the clocks is 2 o’clock.

In front of each clock there are 2 trees. One on the left & the other on the right all in a repeating pattern.

STORY

In the freezing cold air of a late autumn night, she dreams of sailing through crystal clear waters.
It isn’t a ship that she sails in though. It’s a teacup.
She’s just sailing along smoothly. Just drifting along. Nothing seems to bother her. Not even the clocks surrounding her landscape cos even time only exists in her subconscious mind

The partially blue and cloudy sky is reflected in the glassy waters of the Snake River at Farewell Bend State Park in far eastern Oregon. Green foliage covers the near bank, and is partially shaded by the patchy clouds above. Dry, tan-brown mountains beyond the opposite bank are also reflected. The Snake River is especially low as the drought across the west continues.
