Learned more about sphagnum #moss structure. The first image shows what I found, I'd been looking at them from directly above (like the second image) and thought the thinnest lines looked like rungs of a ladder. They are circles! I knew the tube shaped leaves hold water, but the tubes have tubes!

The base of a sphagnum moss leaf that has broken from the stem. A slight angle allows us to see that the parallel lines that run the length of the leaf hold loops of thin lines that will help capture drops of water.From above, the leaf is made up of almost parallel lines that occasionally connect to form long blobby shapes, like worms laying side by side, with what looks like rungs of a ladder running between the lines. Now that I know they are loops, I can see it instead of thinking that some formed a V shape.The tip of a branch of moss, showing the tube shaped leaves that are made of this mesh like cellular structure.
