@monkeyking.mastodon.nz.ap.brid.gyWhen my father was posted to Ventiane, Laos, one of the cassettes we had was a compilation of songs by Johnny Horton. Even at that age, I figured that songs like this one were not normal country and western song topics!
Johnny Horton - Sink The Bismarck
For six […]
@monkeyking.mastodon.nz.ap.brid.gyObviously, one of the many songs about 9/11. Strangely, the lines that struck me most were:
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN, but I'm not sure I can tell you
The difference between Iraq and Iran
Alan Jackson - Where Were You (When The World Stopped […]
@debe.mastodon.nz.ap.brid.gyRemember when we used to at least pretend the vast majority of us believed we were better?
U.S.A. For Africa "We Are The World"
@monkeyking.mastodon.nz.ap.brid.gyIron Maiden - Invaders
Longboats have been sighted and the evidence of war has begun
Many Nordic fighting men, their swords and shields gleam in the sun
Call to arms, defend yourselves, get ready to stand and fight for your lives
Judgement day has come around, so […]
@debe.mastodon.nz.ap.brid.gyThe origin of the "Don't drink the Cool Aid" advice. History we should learn from…
Chevelle "Jim Jones (Cowards, Pt. 2)"
@monkeyking.mastodon.nz.ap.brid.gyFirst I knew of 9/11 was sitting at my desk in the office in London seeing a CNN headline email coming in saying a plane had flown into one of the WTC towers. I was still trying to figure out what that meant (Was it an accident? How big a plane? etc) when another […]
@debe.mastodon.nz.ap.brid.gyPropellerheads featuring Miss Shirley Bassey "History Repeating"
@debe.mastodon.nz.ap.brid.gyA little personal history. I was there! And I sit here wearing my tour hoodie (though, it has holes wearing in it now).
King Kapisi (& Supergroove) "Screams From Da Old Plantation"
One of the inspirations for Saving Private Ryan, the five Sullivan brothers who all served in the same ship and all died when it was sunk at the battle of Gaudalcanal
At least they were together
On a mighty fighting battleship
Somewhere in the South Pacific

@debe.mastodon.nz.ap.brid.gySome nostalgia…
Sun Tan "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)"
@debe.mastodon.nz.ap.brid.gyReal or fictional, still a great historical figure. And a great old show (as I recall… re-watching it might ruin the nostalgia, though, eh?)
Clannad "Robin The Hooded Man"
A long time ago came a man on a track
Walking thirty miles with a sack on his back
And he put down his load where he thought it was the best
He made a home in the wilderness
He built a cabin and a winter store
And he ploughed up the ground by the cold lake shore
And […]
@debe.mastodon.nz.ap.brid.gyPerhaps not about real history, but historically impactful fiction. And this version is from a favourite movie in my own history 😉 ("Singles")
The Lovemongers "The Battle of Evermore"
Inspired by the Bhopal industrial disaster in 1984
Martin checks into the chemical plant of
Katta pella kopa leh
As his young bride prepares for the evening feast
And in zone three he starts the long day
Martin works with strange blue waters (called) […]
@debe.mastodon.nz.ap.brid.gyIt's a historic year, yeah?
Smashing Pumpkins "1979"
Living Colour's sad beautiful take on 9/11
Such a lovely day to go flying
The sky's so clear, the sun is shining
Fate has given me wings
Such a terrible funny thing
Flying - Living Colour (2003)
@debe.mastodon.nz.ap.brid.gyThe #JukeboxFridayNight theme tonight is #History. So I'll have to chime in with
The Tragically Hip "Fifty Mission Cap"
🎶Bill Barilko disappeared that summer (in nineteen fifty one)
He was on a fishing trip (in a plane)
The last goal he ever scored (in over time)
Won the Leafs the cup
They […]
Written about the destruction of Pompeii by Mt Vesuvius in AD 79 (ish) and it's subsequent rediscovery
We found you hiding, we found you lying
Choking on the dirt and sand
Your former glories and all the stories
Dragged and washed with eager hands
Cities In Dust - […]
