#TryThisTuesday
One way to help students learn strategies is to fill in the blanks in someone's strategies.
How would you describe this strategy to solve this percent problem?

Try this shady #yohaku. Fill in cells with 9 different integers to get products shown in each row/column AND sum of 4 shaded cells is -8. #mathsky #iTeachMath

Use 9 different integers in a 3 by 3 grid. The numbers in the top row multiply to -125. The numbers in the middle row multiply to -27. The numbers in the bottom row multiply to -112. The numbers in the left column multiply to 90. The numbers in the middle column multiply to 525. The numbers in the right column multiply to -8. The sum of the integers in the 2 by 2 square at the top left of the grid is -8.

I love openmiddle.com

How many rectangles can you make? How do you know you got them all?

Start your day with this #yohaku. Fill in cells with 9 different factors of 510 to get totals shown in each row/column. #mathsky #iTeachMath

Use 9 different factors of 510 in a 3 by 3 grid. The numbers in the top row add to 120. The numbers in the middle row add to 66. The numbers in the bottom row add to 24. The numbers in the left column add to 46. The numbers in the middle column add to 25. The numbers in the right column add to 139.

The reciprocal of zero should have a name:

It is mathematical behavior to ask 'What do I know?' and 'How can I use what I know to know something else?'

Lovely proportional reasoning Kathleen! Scaling up and down in tandem, combining pieces that make sense and staying in context. Super!

Continuing the theme, we watched part of @chadtopaz.bsky.social's @breakingmath.bsky.social interview about balancing granularity & ability to make statistical conclusions & how you necessarily need to put disparate people into the same box sometimes.

I'm giving a practice quiz in algebra 2 today, and it's 3 pages, so I figured I could put the answer key (shrunk to fit on one page) on the back. But with 3 pages, there's still an empty quarter page left. So, I made it appear recursively. Lol #ITeachMath

A three-page algebra quiz about linear functions. The fourth page is an answer key that shows all three solutions recursively in the last quarter of each iteration

I just heard my proposed talk for 2027 Joint Mathematics Meetings of American Institute of Mathematics (AIM, aimath.org) was accepted! When is the pedagogical community going to wake up to the fact that 2π is an utterly ridiculous way to express a turn?

Let's apply the same logic to magnitude:

let v = 1/2
then:
1 = 2v
2 = 4v
2/3 = 4v/3
1/3+2/3 = 2v/3+4v/3

Complicated and confusing.
