A2 cont. Even that sequence is generated several diff ways.
So much fun math-y stuff to unpack!
I learned about "lazy caterer" numbers, number of regions created by intersecting lines, and Floyd's triangle (+ how to generate it w/Python coding)

A2: Noticing when "neat numbers" show up in math class, opportunities to play w/ number patterns, factoring patterns, etc.
I wrote up the 254th Carnival of Math post, & found neat info on number 254: it's in sequence
1, 2, 4, 7, 11, ... start w/ 1, then add 1, then +2, +3 etc.

A3 I don't have pictures of all of these, but I started this Google sheet as a resource for my teachers. It has so many great routines that help with number sense! docs.google.com/spreadsheets... #ElemMathChat

A3: @fawnnguyen.substack.com has an amazing page dedicated to visual patterns. These images will keep kids thinking, debating, and reflecting in ways you probably didn’t think were possible! Find a catalogue of images she and her colleagues have created here: visualpatterns.org

A3: Number talks, with a focus on coming up with as many ways as possible - and make sure that when you're "done", you #NoticeWonder about the ways. Ruth Parker told me "it's a game changer". #ElemMathChat

A1: Good question! By asking thought provoking questions that can be answered in many ways and then LISTENING.#elemmathchat

A1: Number sense is being comfortable working w/number operations, K-12 (& beyond)
For my HS Ss, it means not grabbing a calculator all the time; approaching operations flexibly to do some reasonable mental math.
Important bc number sense enables HS math topics to flow more smoothly.

A2 What are all of the fun things represent your favorite number? Mine is 12 - My birthday is in the 12 month - donuts and roses come in 12, Christmas is in my 12th month. I can use all of the digits in each of my familys birthday to make 12....... #ElemMathChat

Some of you have already started answering this one!

Q3: What are your favorite number sense activities? Bonus points for links to, or pictures of, the activities! #ElemMathChat

@ryanflessner.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 1:20 AM

Excellent point. How do we help make the connections to broader concepts in math. We're not just tinkering with numbers. We're doing so in order to make this a common feature of our mathematical dispositions. #ElemMathChat

@kimmontague.bsky.socialOct 2, 2026, 1:20 AM

A1: In a nutshell (to me), it's having a dense, flexible sense about numbers and quantity. It's SO important so that we can reason and recognize patterns and relationships to solve problems. #elemmathchat
