change, when it #commence s
first shows all the ugly differences
confirms the doubts we held inside

most prefer the mediocrity of ease
so they revert, retreat, resume
back to the simple, safe, familiar

but not us

we burn bridges
turn rescue boats away
march face first
into the storm

I prefer the word #commence
to the rather plain word “begin.”

And I will often proceed it with “shall.”

Nora signs up for a spiritual retreat. The group relaxes as comfort seems to #commence. Nora's teacher dances around barefoot with silver bells. It shouldn't raise a giggle, but Nora can't help it. The teacher tells her to return to herself. Nora only shrugs.

Worries commence
Is this my life?
Recognizing the unfamiliar
Going forward anyway
Carrying courage

Give us this day
our daily bloodletting

She hits me in my intellect

A low blow

Always my weakest spot
as she pummels
my male insecurities
like a jazz drummer
closing out a set

She gets me up
off the foreplay mat

We #commence makeup sex

She lets me win at that

Bring on the rematch

The Great
& Powerful Wizard
Looks down & says
#COMMENCE!

I don’t know
What his damage is
As I hit
WASH & RINSE

My 1st day
As his housekeeper
I note
This guy is dense

Altho he thinks
He’s ALL THAT—
He’s just counterfeit
WEE PRINCE

I’m sick of him
Already,
I think
& eye the fence

Night Shifts

six o'clock, on the dot,
shrill sirens
commence.
Men
stamp
the world off their boots
to step into
the same dark
they left behind.

With a flash of light and the breath of gods, let us commence this war, and end it in a single act. History will never tell our story, for there will be no ears to hear it, nor eyes to read it. A true war to end all wars must usher in humankind's finale.
