Galatians 5:14 (NKJV): For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” “Just love others” seems like such a simple thing to say. But Paul knew that it needs to be repeated. We do not naturally gravitate towards agape love. Being self-sacrificial is not something that is regularly taught to us by society. We are taught to get ours at all costs. We are told that if we do not put ourselves first, then no one will. Society feeds into us the desires to be selfish. This desire gets between us and our relationship with Jesus. That is the reason for Paul’s reminder. It is a reminder that we can easily let things get in between us and the power of the Holy Spirit indwelling us. We can easily let our desires and lusts get in the way of worshiping God. So, we need to be constantly called back to agape love. We need frequent reminders that Jesus loves us and sustains us. We need frequent reminders that the power of the Holy Spirit is in us. We need frequent reminders that God continually pursues us for relationship and healing. Today, may we more fully live out loving our neighbors and ourselves.
