From Losing Your Backward: Joric has just made a sudden inexplicable appearance in the cab Fion is riding in #WIPSnips #AmWriting #WritingPrompts #Writers #Writing #WritingCommunity #WriteSky #Fantasy #SFF #FantasySky #GasLamp #TimeTravel

Fion’s gaze roved the floorboards, the ceiling, and the rest of the unlikely places an adult male might be able to hide inside a hansom cab, then back to her surprise companion. Her pulse thrummed in her ears, but the parts of her mind that were supposed to react to danger and seek reasonable explanations for inexplicable things were strangely mute.
Joric leaned back in his seat, chest still heaving. “I think you might need an explanation for that.”
“That would be lovely. Thank you.”
He eyed her sideways. “It’s … uh … would it surprise you to hear that I don’t have a good one?”
She sighed. “Not in the slightest.”

October 12th – pulse

#AnthropomorphicNovel, today!

Ray deals with the aftermath of a small car accident she was just in.

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

I wrenched the door open and stumbled out, then glanced back at the other car. The succubus hadn’t moved. If I left her there, she would burn alive. Perhaps a fitting end for her, but I couldn’t just sit here and let her die.
I limped across the distance. The flames were gaining in intensity, so I needed to hurry. I tried the door handle, but the crash had warped the frame, and I couldn’t get it open. The window was broken, however, so I knocked out the remaining pebbles of glass with my elbow, then reached in, unbuckled Carla’s seat belt and hauled her out onto the grass. It wasn’t a pleasant experience, my back screamed in protest, but I got her out.
I dragged Carla up onto the road and over to the other shoulder then checked her pulse; it was strong and steady, but she hadn’t stirred. I bound her feet and hands with plastic ties, just to be safe.
Then I leaned back against a tree and watched the flames bubble the paint on my black Mazda. Maybe I could just tell the Geico guy that it had been stolen.

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #fanfiction "cousin"

It only recently occurred to me that Elrond maybe cannot be High King of the Noldor for the same reason Celebrimbor was passed over.

image
Elrond took the stairs two at a time. An urgent summons to Ereinion was unusual; they had reached a comfortable stage of expecting to see one another at some point every day, or every other at most, and most business simply waited until such an encounter. There seemed little point in trying to guess what might cause such urgency, and yet his curiosity made such guessing irresistible.
Thus he greeted the High King with “Dragon attack?”
“What? Oh, no. I might prefer one. The sentries upon Mordor have sent word that Sauron has brought his orcs to heel and mustered an army. They march most likely upon Celebrimbor and Celeborn, in numbers too vast for the warriors there to confront. Celebrimbor asks our aid.”
A serious matter, then, though a flame of excitement burned. “Then my cousin shall have it.”
“Hush. Of course he will, but must you call him that?”

#WIPSnips #WritingCOmmunity "cousin"
From Book 2, Thorn Twice-Orphaned, currently in the scribble-scrabble stage of writing. Eventually this sort of rambling exposition will turn into scenes.

His uncle and aunt raised him and loved him. Their own daughter was no playmate to him, for she was grown and so were her children, but Elves live such incredibly long lives at such a leisurely pace that such a gap between cousins was no great surprise. There were other children to play and learn with, though not many. They too considered Thorn a little odd, but not a bad sort, for he had a curious and amiable nature, and the games he invented were good.

Today's #WIPSnips word is "cousin" but this 2-part excerpt is more so about my feelings surrounding my grandma's death and the parts of her last months that kept coming back to mind. #bvm #QueerWriters #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #memoir

Mostly, I've been thinking about conversations that happened when my cousin was staying with my grandma in the hospital. Like the day he asked me if I was coming back up there to visit my grandma again and I told him no because I had school. I don't know why but I almost
wish I had told him the full truth. I almost wish I had told anybody in my family. Maybe, I just want confirmation they understood.
I didn’t go back up there a second time once my mom came home on emergency leave because I knew if I did, I would never come back. Not to grad school. Not to my dream. Not to the near grasp I have on the layers of this calling that still evade me.
How could I finish grad school after watching my grandma die?
How could I live through this hell with her pain as my last living memory of her?
I was never strong enough to survive that with my hopes and dreams in tact. Maybe, I'm selfish or weak or a little bit of both, but I always felt — I still feel — like my grandma understood and was okay with it.
She never once asked me to take another trip up there and we talked every day until she couldn't. Even when she had my cousin call me in the middle of the night, when I felt so certainit was the moment, she would ask and I’d throw everything away to be with her, she only told me she loved again and again until I told her she needed to rest.
She had to have known if she had asked me to come, I would have dropped everything for
her. She had to have known, I would have dropped out of school and never looked back.
I don’t know what I would have gotten out of explaining that to my cousin. Maybe, I just wanted someone to tell me explicitly it was okay. To make the hard choice instead of going to be with her. To believe that it was the choice she wanted me to make.

#WIPSnips for Oct. 11 is 'cousin'

Several instances to choose from in the #mythic fantasy, many of them figurative or general, but here's one that's simply a factual relation

excerpt from 'How a Wife Found Lohiau' in 'Sea of Life, Heart of Fire' by Maikel Yarimizu
the word 'cousin' is highlighted
--

The girls all hopped from their seats, honoring the bride and groom with a dance. Keilani stood among their number, and if her dance was not the most elegant or graceful, then so what? It was the feeling that mattered, of the music moving through the limbs. Leinani already knew how she was; her older sister should have expected no less than the enthusiastic flailing of limbs that was her usual dance.
She made sure to wave and wink to Lohiau as well.
“A wonderful performance,” said her sister when Keilani sat herself next to the wedding daïs for a chat. “Very moving, was it not?” Leinani nudged her now-husband.
“Hm? Oh yes. The emotion was palpable,” said Master Hau.
A smile skewed her face. “You need not lie, you know. I managed to kick Cousin Luana, and she was not even next to me.”
“Only the once…”
“Twice.” Keilani snorted. “Perhaps I can have Puanani teach me some moves.”
“All that one thinks about is her ball game,” said Master Hau. “Though I suppose there is that display at the start which could be compared to dancing…” His chuckle was deep and rumbling. “But if it is to impress someone in particular which you desire, I would advise you to stay true to your strengths, rather than compete upon an uneven field.”
She felt her cheeks burn with embarrassment. “Ah, well, I suppose that is true.”

G'morning #WIPSnips!
Milly catches some of the students poking at something they shouldn't be, all while the manor is in crisis mode, so there are better times for this, not now.
#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

“You know you shouldn’t be around here before we’ve finish checking the perimeter, and especially shouldn’t be poking at expensive-“
My words are cut off by a… thing glowing brighter and brighter, and my eyes finally falls on the item the students were so enamoured with. It looks like a glass ball surrounded by three intersecting rings, like if Saturn got drunk and stole all the other planets’ rings and wore them like bandoleers. The glass sphere pulsed with new energy from somewhere, and so did the rings, brighter and brighter and brighter… and then the light within surged outward to cover the inside of the library with a coating layer of fireflies.
We all stare at the new development for a second, unsure of what’s about to happen when the entire room shifts and changes in an instant, from an expansive but crowded library to a small kitchen. It feels familiar… but not my familiar. Somehow I’m cognisant that the familiarity rest with someone else. With… with Sibu? What? How would I know this?
Someone is cooking happily, and I see that all the appliances are worn and cheap but well maintained. The walls are cracked and threadbare, but kept as well as they can be. Colourful patterns are evident everywhere, and the air feels warm and dry. It feels like… like Sibu’s home.

CW: mentioned child death
Seff is the only one of my MCs who mentions having cousins. Early in her story, when she has just agreed to be Drohim's squire, she's keenly aware of that relationship.

I finally crawled into the big straw bed that all the kids in the family shared and tried to go to sleep; I was glad that most of the young ones were already asleep and not making a fuss. My heart started pounding as I tucked myself in, though; packing had made everything that much more real, and it was settling into my brain that this was the last time I would ever sleep in this bed with all of them. This big, warm, crowded, sometimes-peed-in bed, where we all shared whatever sicknesses someone had picked up first, and where we’d once woken up to find my little cousin Nemmy dead.
Yeah, I was making the right decision.

Trainee priest from a priestly family, Sarndrin has brought his off-planeter (yellow) girlfriend, Umbri!on, home for a holiday.
From: Tales of Midbar: Poisoned Well" - if you like this, click the link: www.inkitt.com/stories/635659

Background: A book cover with lots of strange creatures.

"I know some of you have issues with Winemakerism's prohibitions against extra-marital sex and homosexuality," said Galnin, "but you're all upset because my little brother is doing something that's consistent with scripture."

It was news to me that any of those present were against any Winemaker teachings.

"Ha, scripture!" said Pondrit. "Just a book!"

Well, OK, Pondrit basically just made up his own religion as he went along.

"I think ..." I started to say.

"Sorry," cousin Hurbas interrupted, "but I thought it was just our anavim who went to parallel universes, not anavim from other universes coming here."

"Not allowed ..." I started to say but then remembered the new instructions for this sort of thing. "OK, yes, there are anavim in some other universes and they do sometimes come here."

"I think we need to consider this logically," said Father.

"I don't want to have anavim near me!" said Vashrin, staring at me. "I don't want to marry a yellow!"

"Nobody's forcing you, or anybody, to marry a Yitranonaught," said Umbri!on, "but we're nice to our spouses. Most anavim are nice people too."

Vashrin stared at Umbri!on.

The walls of the compound were tall and thick, and Oda had no enemies for hundreds of miles. Mako and her sisters thus lived in comfort and safety, their every need satisfied at a word.
But golden though its bars may be, the castle was a cage all the same.

Music in the hideout

- Brother’s Keeper, my fantasy WIP about two brothers bound by a misunderstood power

But Theris wiped his mouth and stretched. He dragged his pallet closer to Rushak's and took up his letra. As the soothing and beautiful music filled the cave, Drisal could only bury his head in his hands.

The music stopped. Quiet voices penetrated his ire and Drisal realized his brother was speaking with Theris, asking about his letra. Theris showed him the fine details of its workmanship. The two appeared not to have a care in the world beyond the instrument.

"Would you know "The Tree Shaper's Jig'?"
Rushak asked, and when the music started with a nod from Theris he relaxed at last, falling into sleep with a faint smile.

"Sleep well, little COUSIN," Theris murmured.

As ruefully as he could, Ahvram grabbed the outstretched palm. As he did, Avaas hissed and ripped his hand away.
“The fuck—”
A roar that might have been a curse in the Crimon tongue caught both their attentions.
He and Avaas turned to see the leader of the kidnappers, the one with the most tattoos and crooked jaw, rush towards them with a curved short sword. Ahvram scrambled to his feet but was slow. Avaas grabbed him by the shoulder and jerked him aside. The not-Blackblood halted, as if he had been caught mid-thought, and barely had time to get his blade up to block the leader’s attack. The not-Blackblood twisted away from the big slaver, who growled again in his mother-tongue before speaking.
“I have no fight fight with wild goats, I need that,” and he nodded towards Ahvram, “for my mistress. Maybe be smart like cousins and let us take what we need. Then I don’t kill you all, at least not today.”
Avaas looked about ready to tear the man to shreds, but then the red-head produced an apple-sized device in his other palm. It crackled with chaotic magic that made Ahvram’s hair stand on end. Avaas’s eyes flashed with recognition and worry.
“Ya’d fuckin’ kill everyone for that guy?!” Snapped Avaas.
“I do not fail my mistress. Either she gets the boy, or he dies.”
