#Sniptober day 4!

Blair screwed up her face for a moment. “No. I don’t want to die. I’m prepared to die. I’m a hunter. That’s always a possibility. And you’re greater than any opponent I’ve ever fought. I’m prepared to die. But-” She faltered.

The countess raised an eyebrow. “But?”

Blair considered lying. But she found the words slipping out anyway. “I’m prepared to die. I’m not prepared to see Nadia die.”
The countess laughed, her voice echoing off the walls. “Oh dear. You’re smitten. And here I thought to seduce you myself. And instead, I’ve had you seduced by proxy. What are we to do?”
Blair didn’t answer. And the two walked on. After a prolonged silence, Blair spoke.
“Aren’t you going to try and break me, tonight?”
“I have never been trying to break you,” the countess said. “I have been trying to trap you. And so I have. I did so without realizing. But you stand here, trapped. You belong to Nadia. And Nadia belongs to me. You are already mine. Now, I can afford to take my time.”
Blair scowled. “I don’t think Nadia belongs to you.”

Some downtime for the characters. I'm sure some people would want me to cut all of these little things, but nope, gonna keep 'em.

With the evidence of their ceremony removed and the villagers finding places to get a little comfortable, Loke sat on a bench on Magnar’s porch. It was a nice view, but she wondered if it would look different if there were actually crops to harvest.
Blu was heading toward the house when he spotted Loke sitting on the porch. It took a moment to recognize her since she was neither in her normal clothing or the ceremonial clothes she had just been wearing. Asimple long sleeved dress made Loke look matronly. “That ceremony was amazing. Do you mind if we talk a little?”
Loke moved her book from the bench and shifted to the side to make room for him. “Of course.”
“Are those new clothes?” Blu asked as he sat beside her.
Loke gave a nod. “My clothes were still drying on the line when I finished the ceremony so Magnar gave me these to sleep in. I wonder if they belonged to his mother or a sister. Anyway, what’s on your mind?”

From the recent climax of the Road the SunnyFest arc of my rock romance/drama serial, Philosopher Queens. The band goes out on stage for the largest audience yet.

Screenshot of text on a web page. At the top is an illustration of a smiling white man with greying hair and the name 'Kyle' to denote the POV. The word 'belong' is highlighted.

Rachel’s face lights up in an almost maniacal grin of excitement as she rubs her hands together. “It’s time. Let’s go kick some fucking ass!” She turns and jogs out on stage, splashing through the puddles.

I am startled by the volume of cheers erupting from the audience. All those people cheering for her. For us!

Katie touches my shoulder. “See you out there.” She lets her touch and gaze linger until she walks away. She calmly strolls out with the confidence of someone who has found their place in the universe. This is where she belongs. This audience is about to hear exactly why she, and all three of them, belong on that stage.

AJ looks at me and holds up his fist. His eyes glisten, and I feel mine water up, as well. “Last one, best one?”

I fist bump him. “Last one, best one. Love you, AJ.”

“Love you, too, Dad.” With a deep breath and a hop, he runs out to join the other two.

In which a bully is about to get what they deserve~🦈

#TY4LM

‘Hey bitch, tell your fucking girlfriend she touches me one more time, I’m taking it out on your ass!’
I assumed I was the bitch, and the girlfriend was Nerissa, since she stood between us.
‘I saw you push him. You could have fucking killed him.’
‘Scrawny bitch woulda deserved it!’
I wasn’t sure if the music had stopped or I had just tuned it out. I wasn’t even aware of anything else as I got to my feet. Not the people. No flashing lights. Just me, Nerissa, and this guy whose ears were gauged so large he could probably use them as towel racks. Or hitching posts.
They were closer now. He was reaching past her, flipping me the bird. ‘Bitches don’t belong in the pit, you little shit!’
‘Stop calling him that.’
‘Or what? The bitch’s bitch is gonna do something?’
‘I said stop.’
‘What kind of bitch has his—urk!’
Before I knew it, before he knew it, her hand was on his throat. The other she drew back, fist balled. On her face was a smile. It was the kind of smile Mrs. Requiem gave me whenever I came to visit. Sweet, welcoming. Not the least bit threatening. Yet it made you feel like death waited behind it should her whimsy turn that way.
‘You had your chance to shut your fucking mouth.’

And just like that the pair have temporary names to call one another 💙😍

(Also thank you to everyone who has been playing with me! I absolutely love snips and really enjoy reading things out of context, I like the little zap of questions I get all at once reading y’all’s works.)

“So I’m Walker now?” he asked, tasting the name. “Fitting, I suppose. I have wandered far to find this place again.”

“Well, I have to call you something, if you keep showing up here.” Lunaris said with a soft, amused breath.

He moved closer, boots gliding soundlessly just above the stardust path.

“You greet me like someone who knows the shape of this realm,” he said. “So tell me, what should I call you? Not your name. Not yet. Something that suits the way you swing from starlight like it belongs to you.”

His gaze held theirs with the same quiet intensity he’d carried in the forest.

“I’ll call you Warden, until I learn what lies beneath.”

Lunaris wrinkled their nose, the hint of a smirk pulling at their lips. “Warden, hm? I prefer Architect, if we’re flinging titles across the void.”

Luccan’s hand flexed over the hilt of his blade, the manifestation of Bel’s own righteous fury. Its destructive urges slithered along the periphery of his thoughts, eager and ready, but he needed no goading now. “Do not compel me,” he snarled, more breath than voice.

This is right near the end. Dias' duty as a doctor kicks in

#Sniptober

Dias looked around the room. There were dozens of unconscious soldiers and a lot of blood staining the marble floor. Every few moments there was a grunt or a moan from someone regaining consciousness. "You should take SPOILER to your physicians for evaluation. I will tend to some of the wounds here."
"After you fought us? Why would you do such a thing?"
"I've spent a lot of time cleaning up war wounds. Plenty that I've created myself. But if you could get us that stretcher, it would be appreciated.” Dias was exhausted and knew he was overexerting himself, but his sense of duty compelled him, much like he assumed it did for Loke.

No compel, swapping with force~

#TY4LM

‘So why’d you do it?’
‘I don’t know.’
‘You don’t know.’
I shrugged.
‘You threw away a chance to be on the swim team because you don’t know.’
‘Guess so.’
‘I didn’t need your help.’
‘I know.’
Silence. A whistle chirped outside. Guess they got on with tryouts after all.
‘Why’d you do it?’
‘You really wanna know?’
‘Yeah.’
‘Well, if I told you, I’d have to kill you.’
‘Like you were gonna kill him?’
‘I wasn’t—!’ She looked at me. Studied me. I think. I couldn’t tell very well because she was only in my peripheral vision and I refused to look in her direction. But I could feel her eyes on me. ‘I was only gonna hurt him a little. He deserved it.’
‘Even if he did, those weren’t “hurt him a little” eyes.’
She laughed. A big, throw your head back and flash all your pointy teeth laugh. ‘I see why she finds you interesting, Dylan. You’re alright.’ Standing, she offered her hand. ‘Name’s Nerissa. Nerissa Requiem.’
I stood as well, but it was hard to grasp her hand from the side while staring straight ahead. So she grabbed it for me and forced me to turn to face her. I looked at her. She looked at me. Our hands were touching.

Hello #Sniptober pals! I swapped today’s word as well! Compel swapped for force.

Caden is desperate to ruin the surprise for Lunaris and Vex elbows him silent.

Vex chuckled. Behind the mask, something shifted, a crease of amusement, a glint of recognition. “Fate works faster than we give it credit for,” he murmured.

Caden whispered under his breath, “Especially when they’re stoned on a hotel smoke deck watching the sunrise.”

A swift elbow jab.

Lunaris blinked. “What?”

“Nothing,” Vex said smoothly. “Just appreciating timing.”

Lunaris dropped their gaze. A flicker of pink rushed their cheeks. Fingers brushed the hem of their shirt, searching for grounding.

They felt it, the invisible ripple in the air, the sideways glance between two masked men. Something had been said over them, something missed.

Of course you missed something, they thought bitterly, too busy mooning over someone’s eyes like a fool.

They forced a small smile, polite and practiced, the one they wore when the world moved faster than they could translate. A breath in. Careful exhale. Nodded. Fine. I’m fine.

#Sniptober I don't have "parallel," but I do have *a* parallel that I just noticed while I was doing my BOS Daily catch-up.

Bolton 🤝 Janet from The Good Place 🤝 no one identifying them correctly.

White background is Book 1, Brown is Book 2 and possibly lightly spoilery

“Okay, how about this?” Anger crept into Peters’ voice. “I’m the only man in this man’s army who isn’t okay with handing over two teenagers to the leader of a massively advanced terrorist organization.”

“Oh, so we’re going for ice cream,” Leecie said.

“Not a teenager,” I mumbled, mostly to myself, at the same moment.“Everyone heard you threaten me,” Jason argued back.
“After you threatened me! And threw the first punch and hit a kid.”
“Oh, please. It’s not my fault Bolton’s too dense to get out of the way.”
“Not a kid,” I muttered

Jane's Aunt, Princess Iris, is said to be one of the most powerful battlemages in history.

She'll need every ounce of that strength for what's coming.

#WritingCommunity #SnipShare

With Iris having Liz’s’s‘s full attention, we raced towards the side hall. Cam tucked his shoulder behind his shield, barrelling through the heavy wooden door.

“Uhhh…” Cam looked around worriedly. The stairs to the upper level weren’t ahead of us like we had planned for.

“Come on!” I hurried him, breaking into a sprint. “We’ll have to find another way up!”

We headed parallel to the sounds of battle within the chapel. But just as we set our pace, the battle came to us. Iris came crashing through the wall, sharp crystalline shards peppering against my barrier and Cam’s armor.

As Iris rose to her feet, she quickly materialized a new weapon in her hands in a flash of light, a giant folding fan that shimmered with magic. She swung the fan towards the hole she had created, launching a torrential burst of wind that flooded the hall, and forced Liz’s’s back out just as she was entering.

Iris took a momentary breath, the fan disappeared from her hands. Her fierce eyes briefly met ours, before giving us a nod. She rushed back inside the chapel, chasing after Liz’s’s.

After a few days at sea, the group docked in a port on the northeastern shores of Caax and they didn’t waste any time heading to their next destination. There was a village a few hours away and there was still a lot of light left. They headed inland, staying parallel to the main road since the northern part of the river was supposed to be nearly impossible to cross from the swamps. For the most part, things were smooth, but as they neared the village, the group found themselves ambushed by a handful of farmers turned bandits.

“I suppose this is nothing to see as well?”

Tharaiyelagh shifted his shoulders, stretching the long scabs that ran parallel to his spine. “It’s…it’s fine.” He almost held his breath, hoping his prince would ask no more questions. He wanted to keep the truth a secret a while longer.

The first story arc of my rock romance/drama serial is the road to SunnyFest where Kyle fills in during the summer to prepare for the band's first major performance at a music festival.

When that days arrives, Kyle is introspective about it. (From last week's episode)

Screenshot of prose fiction text on a webpage with a purple background of hearts and music instruments on either side. At the top is an illustration of a smiling man with dark, slightly greying hair and the name 'Kyle' to denote the POV character. The word 'parallel' is highlighted.

Rachel is pacing nervously. AJ is hopping in place, shaking his arms, buzzing with energy. Katie has a laser focus at the instruments on stage. Knowing her, she is mentally tweaking a couple solos still.

I am surprisingly calm.

I thought I would be more terrified than any of the bar gigs, but now that we are here—and this is my last time performing with them—there’s a strange peace to the moment.

I don’t know if I am already mentally distancing myself as I watch them get ready to head out there, or if there is some strange parallel to a death row inmate making that final walk. It is simply a calm giving yourself over to inevitability. This is it. The end. My last rock star performance.

#Sniptober Parallel -> along today! An excerpt (that I technically shared earlier this week) from TNS chapter 1, in which Mick fights the first monster of the book.

The golem swung its head up and growled. Its head raised, and its pitted eyes scanned the sky, as if reading the music in the air. Then, with more fluidity than an eight-foot pile of rocks should have had, it swiveled around until its eyes locked onto Mick, who danced on his toes along the lip of one of the craters in the street. Mick took a breath. There was the core: an uncut citrine the size of a baseball, glowing softly with the orange light of earth magic from one of the golem’s eye sockets.

Ah. Right. The chapter that will be too spicy for YouTube.
Still not sure how I'm going to approach that when the time comes...🤔

#TY4LM #SnipShare

I rounded my bed and stuffed everything—condoms, phone, and wallet—into my backpack, but I was still missing the change of clothes. I grabbed some beige cargo shorts and one of the red and white palm tree print beach shirts my father sent on one of my birthdays he actually remembered and stuffed them in my pack. After one last check, I dressed in my usual white button-down and khaki pants with swim trunks underneath, went downstairs and got my bike from the garage, checked that both the garage and front doors were locked, and biked down the road, backpack bouncing from side to side as I pedaled. It wasn’t until I looked back to double-check that I shut the garage door that I remembered the bacon and toast mom left me. Oh well, I was already on the road, no turning back now.
The ride from my place to Marin’s wasn’t too terrible since we both lived on the same street that ran parallel to the oceanfront, but since it was completely flat, I got no downhill breaks from pedaling. Our whole little town of Playa Clara was annoyingly flat in topography and in spirit, but I guess it didn’t matter much with Miami just north of us. Any excitement to be had was all there. Well, any excitement that wasn’t Marin.

She squinted at Boden. “You smell funny.”
“It’s the laudanum.” Quinceberry sniffed imaginary powder off the back of his finger. “Or the cocaine, they smell so much alike to me.”
“You,” she said to him, “smell funnier. Have you been marking your territory again?”
Quinceberry chuckled. “Oh, Hazine, I’ve missed your wit.”
“Wasn’t joking,” she said. “How dare you come back here?”

Good morning #Sniptober pals! Here’s my first word swap of the month, Parallel for beside! Please feel free to swap words for synonyms or vibes! All human works welcome! 😍💙

“Oh! Nice hoodie,” they said, genuinely bright.

Blake blinked. “This? Old drop.”

Cole angled his jacket dramatically. Dorian lifted his wrist without looking up.

Amon watched Lunaris take it all in,

The merch.
The pin.
The ink.

Recognition softened into trust, cautious, but real.

Fellow fans, Lunaris decided.
Not a threat.

Amon swallowed, suddenly grateful for the universe’s tiny favors. Lunaris was smart, observant, and careful. It made him proud in a way he had no right to feel.

He kept his voice soft, gentle, giving without pushing,

“You can sit. You’re safe here. I'm Amon.”

Lunaris hesitated only a second more, then huffed a shy little breath and slid into the open seat beside Cole.
