Played some Lotus II for #ScanlineSunday! It's definitely more Top Gear than OutRun. It has a special mode where the game generates a track for you based on a series of parameters. Despite the title, it's actually a port of Lotus III for the Amiga. Good fun. #gaming #videogames #retro #sega #genesis

The title screen for "Lotus II" for Sega Genesis. In some regions the full title is "Lotus II: RECS." RECS stands for "Racing Environment Construction Set." Despite the title, Lotus II is actually a port of "Lotus III: The Ultimate Challenge" for the Commodore Amiga. The car-selection screen in Lotus II. The player has three cars to choose from: a red Esprit Turbo SE; a green M200 concept; and a yellow Elan SE. The game is showing the Esprit Turbo in the picture.Generating a track in Lotus II's "RECS" mode. RECS stands for "Racing Environment Construction Set" and by adjusting all the different parameters shown here (curves, length, obstacles, etc.), the game will generate a track for you, from a straight-forward point-to-point race in the desert to a night-time city circuit full of twists and turns. Given the near-infinite possibilities for what kind of track the game will make for you, this mode gives Lotus II a lot of potential replay value. The "OutRun" vibes are strong as the red Lotus Esprit Turbo SE drvies down this user-generated track, a tropical beach circuit with the ocean on one side and palm trees on the other. The gameplay of Lotus is very similar to the likes of OutRun or Top Gear, and there are two types of tracks: point-to-point and circuits. There are also two types of races: Time trials and against opponents. The race shown here is against a set of CPU opponents, with the player's position shown by the number in the top right corner (showing the player in first); in time trials, the number instead indicates the timer. Against the CPU, the player also has a red meter in the top right corner of the screen, which indicates their remaining fuel; if that runs out, the race is over. There will be one section of the track where the player can stop and their car will be refueled.
