Free (1968–1973)

Four teenagers who wrote "All Right Now" and burned brilliantly and briefly before heroin and ego pulled them apart. Paul Rodgers and Paul Kossoff made the blues sound effortless. Gone too soon.

Dublin's own rock romantic, all swagger and tenderness, who wrote love songs disguised as bar-room anthems. Heroin and hard living killed him at 36 in 1986; there's now a statue of him off Grafton Street.

Thin Lizzy (1969–1984)

"The Boys Are Back in Town" — twin-guitar harmonies and a poet's heart, led by a black Irishman in a very white rock world. Phil Lynott turned street romance into anthems before heroin took him at 36.
