Ever wonder why a Rails app slows down after a few weeks? The answer often lies in N+1 queries hidden in ActiveRecord associations. Use includes or preload to eager load related records and keep the query count flat. Test the change with a simple benchmark script before deploying. #Rails

If your model has a status column and also a set of timestamps that imply status, one of them is already lying. Usually it is the column. #RubyOnRails #Rails

While I was in Wroclaw, Poland, to conduct a 3-hour workshop for Glimmer DSL for Web, I ran into a Ruby dev who does e-commerce work.

Every time I receive a PR for review with legacy React.js code, I think to myself "Awful! Awful! Awful!", then I relax my code review standards to pass the PR because "it's just temporary React.js code until we rewrite in #Ruby with Glimmer DSL for Web". Every time!! 🤣

Ruby & Rails upgrades don't have to mean a giant, scary project.

I gave Kamal a spin with a Rails 7 API last week—its “kamel deploy” works great locally, but I hit a snag with secret management on Heroku pipelines. How are you handling ENV vars in production? #rails #devops

Dual-booting a #Rails upgrade inside #Docker? Move RUBY_VERSION and BUNDLE_GEMFILE into build args, then hide the next-version service behind a Compose profile so both apps never fight over the same port. go.fastruby.io/b5e #RailsUpgrade

「 I’ve been playing around with Gleam lately. Gleam is fun! It takes a lot from Elm, another language I liked a lot, and they have a great community. But it just doesn’t fill that same space as Ruby 」

A support tool that edits five tables atomically. The hard part was not the transaction. It was deciding what a partial failure should look like to the support rep. #RubyOnRails #Rails

Active Storage variants are generated on the first request that asks for one, in the web process, while that user waits.

One 40MP upload can park a Puma worker for seconds. Preprocess the variants you know you need, or push them to a job.

The half of CVE-2026-66066 people are skipping: it is an arbitrary read of the process environment.

If you were exposed at all, secret_key_base and your service credentials are leaked whether or not you have patched since. Patch, then rotate, then go look.

Genuine question for anyone who maintains an older Rails app: when someone says “it got slow and nobody changed anything”, what do you check first?

Mine is autovacuum. Then a table that quietly crossed the size where the planner stops using the index.

#RubyOnRails #Rails

@levelbrook.bsky.socialSep 6, 2026, 3:54 PM

Three checks that prove you closed CVE-2026-66066, not just bumped the gem:

vips --version -> needs 8.13+
bundle list | grep activestorage
bin/rails runner 'puts :ok'

The third matters. Patched Active Storage refuses to boot on old libvips rather than run unsecurable.

A Rails perf trap that only bites in prod: Active Record leases a connection to the thread on the first query and doesn't hand it back until the request ends. Every HTTP call after that is holding a pool slot.

Your p99 isn't the query. It's other threads waiting on checkout.
