Experts sounding alarm bells to Tas. Liberal government on massive projects in Tasmania with no social licence and backed by big corporate interests. And where the corporates behind AI data centres are sponsoring Tas AFL teams in a PR move. What could possibly go wrong? #nonewstadium #politas

The Tasmanian Liberals are no friends of the arts, culture, or the sciences. They only care about the three "effs." Forestry, fish-farming, and football. #politas

genuinely beginning to feel like the folks who are pro data centres in tasmania must be collectively subject to some kind of gas leak that impacts their cognition

The Tasmanian Liberals secretly proposed similar cuts to TMAG in 2014/15. The then Board and Director rejected and fought the cuts. The plans were never public.

The difference now? A Board full of Liberal government appointees.

Any chance we could listen to experts? Just this once? If not, best skip the whole data centre trend because Tasmania has enough to deal with at this point. #auspol #politas

Deeply angered by our high-school-prefect government gutting the things which make Tasmania special and unique, so they can bankrupt the state building a stadium for the AFL to profit. A clown show of secrecy and incompetence. #auspol #politas www.themercury.com.au/news/tasmani...

If you think the cuts to TMAG’s already over stretched staff are wrong, you can sign this petition to Parliament. #politas

And this here #politas is the problem we’re facing - unless the regulatory power is so great it effectively operates an off-switch for AI data centres, any regulation will be too weak.

@jackmdavenport.bsky.socialSep 26, 2026, 8:02 AM

I’m assuming that a calculation was made about the implications of starting development sans permit versus delay and risk coming under new regulations. This is a good example of why any regulations need to cover both new and exisiting AI data centres. #politas #auspol

To recap: Tasmania’s Liberal Government is fast-tracking highly speculative projects that could have major local and global repercussions, that the majority of Tasmanians oppose— to benefit a company that has misled us repeatedly, run by a guy who did jail time for insider trading. #politas #auspol

‘New polling from EMRS shows more than half of Tasmanians oppose the development of AI data centres…

It [also] showed Liberal voters were the only group in favour of AI data centres, while women and young people were the least likely to be supportive.’

#politas #auspol

Screenshot from article showing pie chart by EMRS.

The question asked is: ‘To what extent do you support or oppose the development of AI data centres in Tasmania?’

The pie chart shows that of the 517 Tasmanians surveyed, 54 per cent were totally opposed, 25 per cent were totally supportive, 17 per cent were neutral, and five per cent were unsure.

A note adds that ‘numbers provided have been rounded up.’

‘Greens MP Tabatha Badger praised the council for intervening...

"If Firmus is indeed pushing ahead at Wesley Vale before having the right approvals, what else will they get up to?

"Do Firmus think just because they sponsored the Tassie Devils they can get a free kick?"’

#politas

@brionykidd.bsky.socialSep 26, 2026, 1:05 AM

‘Cr Freshney said Firmus had committed in writing to working with the council.

"I suggest undertaking work without permits isn't consistent with that written commitment," he said.’
