Day 7 of #NYFF64: Lee Chang-Dong's Possible Love goes deep and long in its portrait of two contemporary South Korean couples, one wealthy, the other pulverized by what people here like to call late capitalism and its cruel ramifications. Is their unlikely friendship going to end badly? Well, yeah. >

What makes Rose especially fascinating is how it turns the body itself into a political instrument against patriarchy and private property. It becomes a film about who gets freedom, who gets ownership and who gets to decide what another person is allowed to be. 3/3

Shot in gorgeous black and white, the film strips the western down to land, labor, violence, survival and ownership. The imagery is stunning, but there’s also something cold and unforgiving about the world Rose is trying to survive in. 2/3

Rose is a beautifully made, incredibly restrained western that proves how much can be said through silence, stillness and performance. Sandra HĂĽller is excellent, giving a performance built as much around physicality and expression as dialogue. 1/3

"It feels like the last sort of film you’d expect from Radu Jude, but one that unveils a glimpse into a well of untapped potential from an already captivating filmmaker."

The elemental bleakness of Hamaguchi Ryusuke’s Evil Does Not Exist shifts to a more cosmic benevolence in the moving ALL OF A SUDDEN. Read Keith Uhlich's #NYFF64 review. bit.ly/4AB2jiu

FJORD: Cristian Mungiu’s legal drama gets lost in the gray area as its only interesting in the courtroom and avoids the deeper moral dilemmas it claims to analyze. Patient and precise yet ultimately hollow. Bald Sebastian Stan innocent. #NYFF64

Somehow, at nearly 3 hours, it never feels long. It’s beautifully shot, amazingly edited, and constantly changing shape as it reveals another layer. A fascinating film about truth, performance, self deception, and the stories we tell ourselves just to keep going. 3/3
