"Poplars on the Epte" (1891), an oil on canvas painting created by the French Impressionist master Claude Monet.

About the Painting
The Series: This piece is a major component of Monet's famous Poplars series, which he painted between the spring and autumn of 1891. He worked from a small boat outfitted as a floating studio to capture the trees from a water-level perspective.
The Location: The scene depicts an elegant row of towering poplar trees tracing the banks of the Epte River near his home and gardens in Giverny, France.
The Story: When the local commune decided to auction off the trees for timber before he could finish his work, Monet actually paid a wood merchant to delay cutting them down until his painting sessions were complete.

That shift, from "it's the chemicals" to a testable mechanism, is what the broader societal impacts of #NSFfunded research can produce, and it's why we build in a before-and-after check instead of just assuming it worked.
