TL;DR - weirdos

Izzy (from WIP1) The minute I met Julie, I thought she was weird. Granted, I wasn’t having a stellar day. It was only quarter past eight, and I already had good reason to be skeptical of anyone who wasn’t actively trying to humiliate me. So when Julie looked past my wariness and offered me exactly what I needed—a blow dryer, a laugh, and her t-shirt—I didn’t know what to make of her. Like I said, weird. When she invited me to lunch the next day, I knew she was weird. Seriously, what grade eight does that for a grade seven? And somehow, the weirdest part wasn’t the invitation. It was that she genuinely didn’t care what anyone thought of her. She was just herself. Unapologetically, unequivocally, unwaveringly. She helped me realize I didn’t have to care either. At lunch, I quickly saw how naturally Julie seemed to possess everything I thought I lacked. My need for a plan met her appetite for spontaneity. My timidity met her intrepidity. My curiosity met her thirst for adventure. But what she helped me realize was that I didn't lack these things, I just needed the right outlet. Like opposite poles of a magnet, our differences made each other stronger. It wasn’t just that she pulled out the best in me, but that we pulled out the best in each other. From that very first lunch, I knew I'd found my best friend. I knew she'd get me into trouble (and we did—though not nearly as much as we probably should have). I knew I could be myself around her (and I always could). I knew she'd have my back (and she did, even when I didn't realize it). Almost twenty years later, I know for a fact she's a weirdo.
