This was interesting! I got a hit on the Merlin app for the European pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) when I was down at the allotments yesterday evening. Reading up on them, it's late for them to still be around, but it goes to show how mild it's been of late #birdsoftheworld | #kent #england

A screenshot of the results page of the Merlin app. Being mostly an armchair birder I can't say that I've ever identified a pied flycatcher, or the yellow-legged gull in the wild (these latter are apparently common here in the SE of England at this time of the year).

I discovered this solitary mushroom growing at the base of a compost bin in my friend's little allotment. Laŭ search it is most likely an Egghead Mottlegill. I can't see a ring on its stem, so I'm thinking that it might be this variety:

A small white mushroom (approx. 2cm cap diameter) with a slight tan hue towards the top. I tried peeking underneath to note the gill colour. Darkish grey-brown, I'd say, but being in shadow it's hard to be certain. I didn't want to uproot it as it was by it's lonesome, and I thought it best to leave it to do it's thing 🙂

A photograph of two iconic buildings that overlook the sea from the opposite side of a road that tracks the beach. One an old cinema that also forms part of the entrance walkway to a local theme come amusement park. Made of brown bricks it has a brutalist quality whilst windows at ground level are more redolent of art deco in my mind. The words DREAMLAND and DANCING displayed in yellow lights. Beyond it a neighbouring and equally iconic tower block fills the remaining space within the image so that surrounding area and sky aren’t visible. It’s late afternoon on a sunny enough day but the light now fading as the sun dipped into low haze.

Dyce’s painting was the product of a trip he made in the autumn of 1858 to the popular holiday resort of Pegwell Bay near Ramsgate, on the east coast of Kent. It shows various members of his family gathering shells. The artist’s interest in geology is shown by his careful recording of the flint-encrusted strata and eroded faces of the chalk cliffs.
