Today I began at Maia, buried beneath Bowness-on-Solway, then walked east to Aballava, beneath St Michael’s at Burgh-by-Sands.

Two Roman forts, neither visible, still shaping the villages above them. Hadrian’s Wall begins as an exercise in seeing the hidden frontier.
