Election night results are unofficial. That's normal.

After Election Day, eligible ballots are still reviewed, audits occur, recounts may happen when required, and results go through canvass before certification.

Before every election, NC county boards conduct logic and accuracy testing on every voting machine that will be used.

The goal: make sure ballots are coded correctly and votes are counted accurately.

NC voters use hand-marked paper ballots or ballot-marking devices that create a paper record.

That physical record can be used to audit or recount results.

Technology helps count votes. Paper helps verify the count.
